Music that Describes Oliver

Oliver Yawn III was nominated by his principal, Paula Bethea.

"Reliable, Relatable, Respected. These are just three words describing Oliver Yawn III," stated Bethea.

After a beloved former custodian retired, Mr. Oliver, as he is affectionately known, assumed the role of leading the custodial staff at the school. On one lucky day, while passing through the hallways, an observer witnessed Mr. Oliver – a towering figure standing well over six feet – stooping down to tie the shoelaces of a young student. This heartwarming moment, etched into the annals of a 20-plus-year career in education, stood out as one of the most endearing experiences.

Beyond his custodial duties of maintaining the school's cleanliness and aesthetics, Mr. Oliver is an integral part of the school family. His presence is a daily source of laughter, whether it's sparked by his witty remarks or the jokes he effortlessly shares. He has an uncanny ability to recall many students' names, often expressing his commitment to check in on them, saying, "What's their name? I'm going to make sure that I check in on them." As the head custodian, he exhibits a meticulous eye for every facet of the building, ensuring it remains a clean and inviting space day in and day out. Dedication runs deep in his veins, readily exemplified by his willingness to work late evenings and even weekends to accomplish tasks. Whenever an urgent call for assistance arises, Mr. Oliver can always be counted on – one never needs to search for him.

Each Friday, the school community gathers for a "Town Hall" event, fostering connections, celebrating achievements, and enjoying the positive vibes of music. On a particular Friday, a glance toward the stage revealed Mr. Oliver dancing exuberantly with a group of young men, cheered on by the crowd. He is not merely the life of the party; he embodies the very essence of the festivities, transforming each occasion into an unforgettable celebration.

BOSS! aka Oliver was my favorite custodian (still is) I miss over at Copeland. He was so great with the kids. A true role model. From dancing on stage with the kids to give young boys a talk, you always knew where he was. You never heard him say “That’s not my job!” Oliver has true, hard to find, work ethic!!

Mr. Oliver is an exceptional custodian who excels in maintaining a safe and clean learning environment for us all to enjoy. In addition to his daily work, he always finds the time to talk with students, gets teachers the supplies and help they need, and yes, I too have heard a little Eagles banter in the halls. He does all of this with a perpetual smile and positivity that radiates from him. His presence extends beyond his work duties and he is a true asset to our school community.

Oliver's title is Head Custodian, which is fitting for the role he plays at Joyce Kilmer School. Yes, he and his team create a safe, clean physical environment for our students. However, Oliver's title as head custodian extends to his mission to protect and nurture a positive intangible environment -- he is the custodian of the culture of our school. Oliver develops relationships with students and is quick to impart his words of wisdom and positive outlook with every student and every class. His positivity reverberates throughout our hallways and our Town Halls, always focusing on the good. Here are just two examples of Oliver making a difference: One of my students last year said he was afraid to participate in a Town Hall in which students were selected to learn cultural dances on stage. Mr. Oliver gave him a pep talk, speaking from his own experiences as a child. Next thing you know, this student volunteered and was dancing in front of the entire school -- with a huge smile and a huge boost in confidence! Another day, Mr. Oliver brought a comfy chair to my classroom! Why? Because he saw that my students loved to read and thought they would enjoy this chair that was in his home. This wasn't a chair in storage at school; this chair was from his home, but Mr. Oliver saw yet another way to make a difference. My students still love this chair today as they cozy up with a good book to go on their next adventure! I am so glad to support Mr. Oliver -- he is a difference-maker, a light-bringer, a life-changer.

Just today, Mr. Oliver stopped what he was doing in the cafeteria to assists students who had challenges getting in line to get their food. This is just an example of one of the main ways he continues to contribute to our school community. The students and staff appreciate him!

Oliver is a man that wears so many hats in our school community. Oliver ensures our school is safe and pristine which makes it easy for the staff and students to have pride in our school. He can be seen mediating with students or dancing with them fostering the positive and healthy relationship they respect and desire. Oliver enjoys recapping the weekend's football games (supporting his favorite team) with staff while ensuring that the staff have all the resources needed to be successful in the classroom. Oliver always goes above and beyond and it is noticed and appreciated. He is a cherished leader in our school community, a true staple!

After reading this I laughed and at the same time cried. I, me, us, we as custodians never get recognized for what we do beyond our jobs. It feels so good just reading these words and inspires me to continue being me and talking to these kids, joking with them, correcting them, showing them love and helping them realize there’s a big world waiting for them. I just want them to be ready for the world, because the world is waiting for them.
