Dianne Douglas was nominated by her colleague and former student, Johna Bingham.
"Ms. Douglas was my health teacher in the 90's," Bingham explained. "It felt like having your mom at school each day because she invested her heart into her job. Teaching has been a mission for Dianne since she first started. I remember her greeting me each class with a hug and a smile. She was someone you wanted to impress and make proud. As a 14 year old, I valued her opinion, which is saying something about Dianne. After all, I wasn't the sweetest 14 year old girl."
In 2008, Bingham joined her alma mater's staff. In a new capacity, she got to work alongside Ms. Douglas, sharing the same student population.
"Aligning our mission to give love and bless every child we can. I grew to respect and value Dianne even more," said Bingham. "At times, I would vent on social media, and then quickly remove it before Dianne reminded me to pray about my swearing habit."
Since 2008, Ms. Douglas has continued to transform students in her class, both academically and personally. She spearheaded the AVID program at her school before it became widely-known. Today, AVID is breaking out everywhere. Bingham says that she has seen the impact of AVID on students in her chemistry class, even though she is not an AVID-certified teacher.
"She has mentored us all without even realizing it, by demonstrating what compassion can do in school," said Bingham. "Our school is truly blessed to have the love of Dianne Douglas - her commitment to the staff development and the student body is unmatched."
Ms. Douglas created a staff and student ministry many years ago, "Arise and Shine". Arise and Shine meets weekly before school hours, and anyone can attend, learn about compassion and pray together. This ministry has changed countless lives and enhanced so many staff-student relationships on campus.
"Dianne is definitely a go-to person - she will help you professionally and personally if within her ability," said Bingham. "I am more than blessed and grateful to have shared time with this amazing woman. I love, respect, and cherish her, and pray for her prosperity in everything."
I had the opportunity to grow with Mrs. Douglas from the beginning of my freshman year up to now. She was an amazing teacher, supervisor, and of course an amazing school mom. There are many reasons why Mrs. Douglas is one of the most respected teachers at the school, the biggest being the love and care she has for every student. She wants everyone to succeed in life no matter their passion. I would not be where I am today without this wonderful woman in my life. I have always been one to be on top of my work, but Mrs. Douglas knew I could be even more. From a shy little freshman girl, into a courageous nursing student Mrs. Douglas provided me with the path and It was up to me to work for it. I will forever be thankful to be a student, coworker, and school daughter to her.
Ms.Douglas has been in my life for nearly 6 years, she is the type of role model each and every student deserves to encountered at least once in their career. Her genuine love and care has the power to change the atmosphere. She is not only loving and caring but strong and truthful. I am bless to have met such a wonderful soul and pray that wherever she steps foot she will continue to be that light and peace and in the midst of darkness and troubles .I will never forget her encouragement , support and above all faith in me as I headed out to college . She believe in me before I believed in myself and for that she changed my world. I will be forever grateful.
I have known Mrs. Douglas for over 10 years now. She has been my teacher, employer, and now a college of mine. Dianne is one of the most selfless and loving people that I know. She has always showed compassion to her students, coworkers and her friends. As a teacher, Dianne poured her heart and soul into teaching her students and ensuring they had a full comprehension of the material. As an employer Dianne was fair and professional when it came to what she expected from her tutors. It was always a joy to come to work. Dianne fostered an evironment for learning for both her students and her employees. But throughout these roles I found a friend in Dianne. She has constantly supported me throughout the good times and the bad times. Her gentile and kind nature has carried with me though the years. Wow, I am so honored to share my thoughts on why i am certain that Dianne Douglas is THE LIFE CHANGER OF THE YEAR. Mainly because she is connected to THE ETERNAL LIFE CHANGER and ever since i have known Dianne, she always brings life and wisdom into people’s lives.....I met Dianne in the middle 70’s and watched her coach young people in sports and teach them so many character lessons.....i have see her raise a family and stand by her husband, no matter what storms may have come into their life. Mrs. Douglas is an exceptional, amazing, supportive one of a kind colleague and educator. I am so fortunate to have Diane as one of the most influential people in my life. Diane has always been a go to person for me and is very compassionate about her career. She invited me to be apart of the Christian Club at John I. Leonard High School and it was the most welcoming feeling any one could experience .She became the AVID sponsor and has made the program the best it can be and more. Diane is a mother, mentor and the true meaning of a trustworthy person. She is respected by many at John I. Leonard High School and in the community as well. The only person that deserves this award is Mrs. Diane Douglas.
Dianne is an amazing educator and colleague! She brought me into the AVID program and I couldn't be more grateful! I have had great opportunities and met some amazing students because of her! Dianne is always there to assist me with anything that I need! She always has a great attitude and encourages me each and every day to strive to be my best! This place just won't be the same after she retires!
Dianne Douglas is an exceptional person. I’m fortunate to know her as mother-in-law to my niece, grandma to my great nieces, and to call her my friend.
I know Dianne to be a sincere, caring individual who truly derives her pleasure from seeing the people in her life live up to their potential. Whether it’s her students or her family, she gives her all to help them to succeed and accomplish their goals. Dianne is supportive, encouraging and extremely empathetic. She’s the kind of person you want in your corner, as she is an excellent motivator and “cheerleader”. Dianne’s faith helps to guide her which in turn enables her to guide others. Unfortunately I wasn't a student of Mrs. Douglas during my four years at John I Leonard High School. During my freshman and sophomore years, I heard many students talking a Mrs. Douglas. Students would describe her as sweet and nice. I was curious and intrigued by this because so many of my friends were talking about Mrs. Douglas. I had an overwhelming urge to meet her. My prayers were finally answered at the beginning of my junior years.
When I met Mrs. Douglas at Arise and Shine, she immediately became an inspiration. She was so welcoming. Her presence radiate warmth and comfort and safety. During my Senior year, she always inform me about scholarships and college applications. She would always ask about my days because she knew I was under a lot of stress. The most amazing thing was, it wasn't just me Mrs. Douglas was like that to, she acted the same way with all of her students. She was looking out for each of her students in her class and Arise &Shine. Yet she still made each and everyone of us feel special. Her caring doesn't end in high school though. It carries on through your entire life. She always find time to check up on me and makes surr I'm doing alright financially, emotionally, and academically.
I was expecting Mrs. Douglas to be sweet and nice as many as described her as but I got something much better. Nice and sweet cannot even begin to describe her. No words in the dictionary can fully describe her awesomeness but these are a few that comes to mind whenever I think of her: loving, caring, understanding, encouraging, patient and so on.

Dianne Douglas has probably been one of the most influential people in my life. In 1998, I had the pleasure of having Mrs. Douglas as my freshman health teacher at John I. Leonard High School. From meeting her the first day of class, I could tell Mrs. Douglas was no ordinary teacher, let alone, human being. She made her classroom feel like home for us timid freshman, invited us to check out her sponsored Christian club, Arise and Shine, and allowed us to feel like we belonged. Over the past 20 years I have had the pleasure of being Dianne's student, colleague, mentee, and personal friend. She mentored me not only as a freshman, but as a novice teacher, always opening her door for wisdom and advice. I had the pleasure of working beside Dianne in her endeavors with John I. Leonard's AVID program, as well as the Arise and Shine Christian club. Although we were colleagues, I can say Dianne has always felt more like a mother to me. She has guided me through the past 20 years in school, marriage, career, and family, and for her prayers, I am forever grateful. Dianne is more than deserving of this LifeChanger Award.
I remember the very first time I encountered Mrs. Douglas at John I Leonard. It was the first week of freshman year, both AVID classes had gathered around and introduced everyone. The very first thing that she emphasized to us was that she would be our "AVID mom".
For the next 4 years, Mrs. Douglas was just that. She made sure that any issues in my classes were solved immediately and with no hesitation. Senior year as her tutor was the most rewarding. I got to experience Mrs. Douglas do what she does best everyday; change people's lives. I believe that she is the sole representation of this award, with many people seconding my opinion. Now, even as a college freshman, I know I can still rely on her for anything, even if it's just a hug and a warm southern smile.

Mrs.Douglas compassion in education and in life is an inspiration to me. I can proudly state that ,the day of my avid class sophomore year she was truly a gift. Not only her love and daily smile made me feel welcomed and assured, it was that she is knowledgeable and was willing to share and guide.
One day in my sophomore year she called us her children. At the beginning I really didn’t feel the bond, but a fast pace Mrs.Douglas really gained my trust and the bond grew. As a student I highly respect her and see the how strong she is as a human.
A particular moment that will forever be engraved in my memories is the day she taught me a valuable lesson, that I cherish, is the lesson of learning to appreciate. Mrs.Douglas told a story about her mother’s artistry in fabricating hand made dress for her. And in every dance or gathering her intricate dress was highly noticed and talked about,I personally think Mrs. Douglas looks amazing in everything. However, there was one particular dance she wanted nothing more but a store bought dress for a change. Her mother agreed and she went with the store bought. After the dance she learned that the handmade dresses were much her style. From this story I learned to be grateful and to appreciate more. To be allowed to hear how Mrs.Douglas was in her childhood being so understanding and sympathetic so young , that this made me question my past. Mrs.Douglas advocates for development and acting in a positive ways. Without her confidence in the entire class to tell the story, that specific afternoon I went to my family and promised to show more gratitude wouldn’t have existed.
I appreciate Mrs.Doulas. She is amazing, wonderful, wise, dedicated, and ultimately an angel.
I had the pleasure of having Mrs. Douglas as my health teacher in high school and when I say pleasure, I really mean it. I might not have realized it as a teenager but looking back now, Mrs. Douglas was a bright light in my high school career. She did more than just teach us about health, she was an overall role model in all that she did. She always put her students first and that is what truly matters most as a high school student. She is a teacher that I will always remember.
I had the pleasure of being a student in Mrs. Douglas’s class and also to be a member of his club “Arise and Shine”. As a freshman, I was in her health course and she took time to get to know me. I was struggling with personal battles and she became an encourager but also a confidant for me. She always saw the best in her students and help to bring it out of them. Mrs. Douglas was one of my high school teachers and also the sponsor of a club I was in “Arise and Shine”. When I first met her, I was a freshman going struggling with a lot of personal battles. She took notice to me and became one of my greatest encouragers but also confidants. I always felt loved and welcomed around her, as did everyone who was in her class. She loves people and it is very evident in all of her interactions. She changed my life for the better and continually helped me become a better student and person.
Diane was a teacher of mine and my sisters many, many years ago! I remember she was always kind, thoughtful, and caring for all of us. I can honestly say I never heard her raise her voice in anger or discontent with us. She is a wonderful and kind caring soul and teacher
I have had the absolute pleasure of knowing Mrs. Dianne Douglas, from the perspective of both a student and an employee. I first met Mrs. Douglas when I was an insecure and shy freshman student at John I. Leonard High School. I had Mrs. Douglas for half of the school year as my health teacher, and I could tell instantly that she was an experienced teacher and truly loved her craft. Mrs. Douglas was, and continues to be, more than a teacher. She treats her students as if they were her children. She treats each student with such a high amount of respect and genuinely cares about each and every one of them. Even when a student is no longer in her class, she is still invested in their life and is curious as to how they are doing. The amount of times I have seen students confide in Mrs. Douglas about problems going on in school or at home would make you believe she is also a counselor! Mrs. Douglas is truly the embodiment of southern charm.
Although I was only Mrs. Douglas's student for a few semesters during my freshman year, my best friends were enrolled in John I. Leonard's AVID program, which would work with students from their freshman to senior year. Therefore, when I was around my friends, I would frequently be around Mrs. Douglas and she would always greet me with a warm smile and let me know how proud she was of me that she would continuously see my name on the honor roll lists.
Upon graduating from John I. Leonard High School and entering FAU, I was contacted by Mrs. Douglas and she asked if i would like to work as an AVID tutor. She told me I would be a great influence on the students since I excelled in my coursework during high school, and as a John I. alumnus, I was so flattered that she wanted me as her employee. While tutoring for the AVID program, I was so impressed with the program Mrs. Douglas had established at our school. She was presented with a completely new program and Mrs. Douglas has done an exceptional job creating the AVID program at John I. Leonard from scratch. I am so appreciative that Mrs. Douglas allowed me to be a part of the AVID program. Mrs. Douglas taught students real-world skills that were pivotal to their success beyond high school. Most students at John I. would be first-generation college students, and she knew it would be difficult for them to navigate their next step. That being said, she would organize workshops where me and my fellow tutors would explain the college application process, describe our experiences, and answer any questions the students might have. Mrs. Douglas would also always ask me how I was doing at FAU after our tutoring sessions were complete. She has really seen me transform from being a high school freshman who had no idea of her future career goals to a college senior who is currently completing interviews for medical school. Despite no longer being Mrs. Douglas's student or employee, she still always keeps in touch and asks me for updates in my life, and always remember where we left off in our last conversation.
Mrs. Douglas without a doubt deserves to be the lifechanger of the year. She is such an experienced, professional, and caring individual, and that is translated in her teaching. Every student would let you know that Mrs. Douglas is such an extremely kind woman, as well as her fellow employees. Since I have been in both positions, I have gotten to know Mrs. Douglas very well and I know that she is very, very deserving. She is in her last year of teaching before retirement, and I know that she has truly touched each and every student she has encountered.
Before I met Mrs. Douglas, I always heard amazing, positive stories about her from some of my friends. I didn’t know who she was but I did know that she is an amazing teacher. I met Mrs. Douglas my senior year when I became an AVID tutor for her. I can say that I am truly happy to have met her. As soon as I met her, I saw how caring she is. She is very passionate about her job as well. I instantly saw how she truly cares about the wellbeing of all her students. She always encourages her students to do better and to me, that is inspiring. I may have only been one of her AVID tutors my senior year, but I’ve gotten to know that she’s truly an amazing person. I instantly felt loved by her the moment I met her. She’s encouraged me to do well. She is very supportive and compassionate. It saddens me that I wasn’t in her AVID class for my four years in high school, but I’m even happier to have the pleasure of knowing her now. I can say that there is no better candidate for this award than Mrs. Douglas. She definitely deserves it.
Mrs. Douglas was my AVID teacher all throughout high school and I'm very glad I had the opportunity to get to know her. I remember the first time I met her at the freshman orientation, and I'm glad my mom forced me to join that college prep program. Getting to know my AVID family and Mrs. Douglas was probably the most impactful part of my high school career. Everyone, but Mrs. Douglas, specifically, supported me, with anything I or any of my classmates ever needed. She definitely deserves this award because without her and without the AVID program she coordinates, so many students would have felt unsupported in high school, including me. She truly and honestly cares about her students beyond the classroom. She's definitely impacted the paths of so many students and we can't thank her enough.
I am an incredibly lucky woman to have Dianne Douglas in my life as as my mother in law, grandmother to my daughters, and role model to our family of what hard work and commitment really look like. She is the kind of woman you can always count on. Time and time again I have seen her pour her heart, soul, energy and time into the things she cares about the most. Those things run the gamut from family to school, friendship to church. What seems to be the common thread is people- she truly and deeply cares about people. I think this wholehearted dedication is what allows her to make a real difference. From my view everyone that comes into her life receives the benefit of her love and support. She follows through on her promises, and takes the time to extend welcome and warmth to all that cross her path. These qualities are what make her a change agent in the life of many. Whatever she receives in life she gives back ten fold.
I have watched her participate in countless college field trips with her AVID (college prep) students, fund raise for scholarships for them, and show up as a mentor, teacher , and mother figure. This is not only my opinion- but represented in the cards that her students send, the gifts and parties they plan for her, and how they return over the years offering gratitude and desiring to stay connected. My husband (her son) is also an educator because of the example that she set since he was a child. I’m grateful to be a part of this lineage and the positive impact it has on our community and in turn our world.
Mrs. Douglas is a phenomenal teacher, mentor, and friend to all her students and coworkers. I was a student of her health class in high school and always loved the way Mrs. Douglas made her class so interactive and still somehow personal when she was teaching to a class of 30 diverse students. She was actually the one who inspired me to look into a career in health education where I found my current career of Occupational Therapy! Mrs. Douglas is an amazing person and very deserving on this honor.
Mrs. Douglas was my AVID teacher for 3 years. Even though I began the program a year late she welcomed me with open arms and an open heart, it felt as if I was there from the very beginning. Mrs. Douglas provided snacks for us when we were hungry, provided a safe space when we felt alone, and provided a helping hand when we needed it. She has raised thousands of dollars over the years for the AVID scholarship. She put many aspects of her personal life aside in order to cater to our needs. She is a true inspiration.
Mrs. Douglas literally changed my life during my senior year of High School. It was on one of AVID’s very own college tours, that I realized that I wanted to be a Gator. Without her I wouldn’t be the Gator I am today.

I had the blessing of meeting Mrs. Douglas during my freshman orientation in 2014, and with the most welcoming smile, she changed my life forever. Although AVID was application based she saw the potential in me and added me to the program. She gave me the opportunity to have a solid support system and a family in high school, which I still lean for and to support after the fact. As our AVID mom she shared herself with our class which created such an amazing bond that I miss till this day, her relentless encouragement, her commitment to helping us succeed, her ability to love us no matter the situation has truly humbled me knowing someone so selfless and kind. When it came time to apply to universities, although I thought I would never be admitted, she forced me to apply to the University of Florida. Now I'm typing this from my gator dorm room and I just want to say she is more than deserving of this title, she has done for so many with no interest in returned favors. She is an caring and passionate educator and one that has been touching lives for years. To Mrs. Douglas I say Thank you so much for everything and you deserve this!
Mrs. Douglas is an exceptional teacher that I will always be grateful for. Although I was only actually part of her classroom for one semester my junior year; she treated me like her own student from there on after. I became her student aid and was able to witness her selfless manner with so many students that walked through her door. Although at times they didn’t recognize and appreciate her efforts, she never changed her character. She faced daily challenges and struggles but never lost the urge to continue pushing forward until she met her goals. As head of the Scholarship Committee, she worked hard day after day to fundraise and make her purpose known. Planning and organizing everything that would lead to the announcement of these scholarships required extensive work. However, she was patient under every circumstance; an admirable trait of her's. I thank Mrs. Douglas for the endless support and motivation that she offered me throughout high school. She was always willing to know my next step in everything to guide me the best way possible. When she learned my goals, she made sure to keep me on track of them as well. Nevertheless, she celebrated and was present in every one of my accomplishments my senior year. She opened many doors for me without the need to; something that not every teacher would do. Mrs. Douglas has long been deserving of this award; for many years she has gone above and beyond for the greater good of her students.
I have known Mrs. Douglas for over 15 years as a pier teacher, in that time she has demonstrated great class and grace. She is a great role model for all of her students, and I have been told repeatedly by her students how much she impacted their lives. In over 25 years of teaching, I have never seen such a more caring and loving teacher to her students and colleagues.
I had the pleasure of being a student in Mrs. Douglas's health and wellness class about 10 years ago and a member of Arise and Shine, the Christian club she began and led at school. She created a place open for all students to come every Tuesday morning whether it be to speak or just to listen about the Word of God. She led this club through many events yearly, on top of teaching her classes, and planning college visits for students. Mrs. Douglas was there for me throughout my high school career and truly took an interest in my future and plans I had. Even after all of this time, we still keep in touch and she continues to encourage and support me to this day. Mrs. Douglas truly is a life changer and anyone who knows her would agree. She goes above and beyond for her students, her classroom, and activities outside of the class - always with her students best interest in mind. She has a way of making each and every student feel important to her - like her own family. Mrs. Douglas has a heart of gold and still to this day goes out of her way to reach out to show she cares. I am so excited for her to be recognized through this nomination and believe she is most deserving of this award!
They say you always remember that one teacher who had an impact in your life. Well, for me, that is Mrs. Douglas. She was always so kind and willing to listen to me whenever I needed it. She never seemed to be in a hurry to get a student to finish up quickly so she can do something else. She poured herself into her teaching position. Mrs. Douglas is a caring individual who will always be one of the positive impacts in my life. Thank you for all that you have done for me and continue to do in your teaching career. Ms. Douglas is nothing short of amazing. As a first year counselor, Ms. Douglas welcomed me with open arms and made me feel so comfortable. She is an amazing colleague and friend and goes above and beyond for staff and students. Everyone needs a Ms. Douglas in their life!
I had the pleasure of knowing Mrs. Douglas for four years. She taught me many things that I needed in life and she is a perfect role model. She pushed me, motivated me to become the great student I am now and she has an amazing heart. She’s one of the most caring and outstanding people I have ever met in my whole life. I thank her for everything she has done for everyone. Mrs. Douglas made me feel at home anywhere and anytime I was with her. She makes me feel welcome and loved and she cares so much about everyone and anything. She sees the positive out of anyone and wants every single person to succeed and accomplish anything they desire and she will happily support you through anything. Academically, she is the main reason why I’ve accomplished so much in school. She pushed me to apply for scholarships and to schools and even though I didn’t think I would be accepted but even when I didn’t believe in myself, she did. She is the reason I’ve reached these big achievements in my life and she’s always seen the best in me starting four years ago. Mrs. Douglas loves every single person she meets. I thank her for everything she’s helped me accomplish and I can never thank her enough for it. When I first came to teach at John I Leonard High School six years ago, I shared a room with Mrs. Douglas and we became like peanut butter and jelly, two very different people who worked incredibly well together! My daughter was quite ill that year and she was one of my colleagues who checked on her health and my well-being every single day. By the end of the year, she asked me to join the AVID team as she serves as our AVID Coordinator. Teaching the AVID Elective was a life changer for me! Dianne created a family with her AVID students and I followed her lead. The students who leave AVID will be forever in her debt for pushing them to excellence that they didn't even believe they could achieve. The teachers who teach AVID courses are also in her debt as AVID gives them a fun, interesting, creative outlet. Additionally, Mrs. Douglas chairs the Scholarship Committee and has helped to raise several hundred thousand dollars over the years for college scholarships for students. I cannot begin to tell you how much of her own money she has contributed to not only the scholarship fund, but purchasing basic needs for students. I can remember her furnishing a student's dorm room with pretty much everything from A to Z because the student had nothing. This was from her pocket and this is just one of many, many stories. When Mrs. Douglas retires, it will be a loss to the teaching profession and to the students who could have been potentially part of her nest. It is with extreme pleasure that I write this letter of recommendation supporting Dianne Douglas of John I. Leonard High School as a nominee for the 2018 Life Changer of The Year Award. Mrs. Douglas is an exceptional educator that exhibits a high level of commitment, dedication and professionalism every day in her classroom.
During my time as her supervisor, I found Mrs. Douglas to be one of the most caring professionals that I had ever encountered. She was not only a teacher for her students, but a role model for them as well who deeply cared for them both academically and personally within and outside of the classroom. Regardless of the environment in which one might observe her interactions with the students, you could tell it was all about the “Kids.”
Mrs. Douglas’ colleagues admired her for her commitment to her students and to the positive school culture in which she strived to promote school wide at John I. Leonard High School. There was rarely a time that she was unwilling to step forward and take on the challenge of supporting the learning of her students. I adored the energy level and the passion she displayed along with the extraordinary efforts she demonstrated each day. No matter the cause or the need, you could always count on Mrs. Douglas for assistance. Her calling was to be there for children to help them cultivate and to develop a road map for their future beyond their high school experience.
I am sure that if you spoke with any of her current or former students they would describe her in this manner: enthusiastic, innovative, flexible, high energy, passionate, nurturing, persistent, and above all she maintained an astronomical degree of integrity when performing her professional responsibilities as a member of the John I. Leonard Faculty. I cannot think of a more deserving individual for this honor than Mrs. Douglas. I am humbled and blessed to have had the opportunity to work with her during my tenure at John I. Leonard High School. Her impact on her students, her peers, and all of us is beyond reproach.
This quote by Leo Buscaglia, which is one of my favorites, says it all about Mrs. Douglas. “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” I can tell you that with a smile, with her kind words, with her listening ear, with her honesty and trustworthiness, and her genuine care for ALL Mrs. Douglas continues to change the lives of the students she encounters. She has been able to teach the most challenging students, build trust with those students who have never trusted anyone, and heal the hearts of those students whom no one ever knew their hearts were hurting.
Therefore, I fully endorse her nomination as John I. Leonard High School’s nominee for the 2018 Life Changer of The Year Award.
Dianne is very deserving of this award. She is a teacher who has shown compassion and care beyond her classroom responsibilities. She was extremely influential in my high school years and we’ve continued to keep in touch after graduating. Dianne has always been a cheerleader and supporter of her students. One of the things that stands out to me about Dianne is the time and sacrifices she made to let students know she care about them. I am personally so grateful for her being a mentor and light in my life. Dianne has made such an impact over her years in the classroom.

I have known Dianne for the past several years as one of the most prominent AVID coordinators in the Palm Beach County School District and in the past year at John I Leonard High School. Dianne is someone that is, purposeful, dedicated, and an absolute wonder. She will surely be missed when she retires next fall.
In these past several years, I have seen Dianne Douglas excel as an educator and leader. Dianne has been a faculty member at John I Leonard for the past 30 years and has served in multiple capacities including; AVID coordinator, scholarship committee Chair, EBC committee, Health and Physical Education Department Chairperson, sponsor of multiple clubs and member of the Assistant principal interview committee.
As a direct result of Mrs. Douglas’s commitment to the John I Leonard community as well as her students, she has twice been nominated for the Macy’s teacher of the year award. She is the 2008 winner of the “I Make a Difference” award. Mrs. Douglas is a Dwyer award winner for senior high education and consistently rated highly effective in her observations.
It is known school and district-wide that Mrs. Douglas consistently goes above and beyond for the students at John I and the community. Her selflessness has inspired and led many students to achieve their goals and dreams of not only going to college but some of the most prestigious universities in the world.

Since the moment I met Mrs. Douglas she has been nothing but kind and compassionate. Her passion towards her students is apparent in everything that she does. Her forward thinking in making sure that her students not only graduate, but also attend college is why she is a true Life Changer! Mrs. Douglas is the true definition of a life changer. I had the pleasure of having Mrs. Douglas for four years as my teacher while I was in the AVID program. Everyday I looked forward to entering her classroom, she always welcomed each and everyone of her students with a "Good Morning!" and even a hug. She created a sense of safety and "home" in her class. We became a family almost immediately, we knew we could count on her for anything we needed, whether it was academically or personal. Thanks to her, many went to college, attend their dream school, and even earned many scholarships. She pushed us to the max because she truly believes in her students and saw something in each and everyone of us. She was dedicated to her students in making sure they had a bright future ahead of themselves. We would always wonder "Why is she being so hard on us?" We eventually understood she was preparing us for the future and wanted us to accomplish our goals. I more than thank her for that. I admire her. Not only is she strong and determined, but nurturing, loving and selfless. She is a life changer but will forever be my "AVID Mom."
I have known Mrs.Douglas for four years. Looking back at it it is crazy to believe that I had such a phenomenal role model in my life for that long. She gave me guidance throughout high school and helped me find my path in life. Our AVID family had a bond that was like no other and it all radiated from the love and support she gave each of her students in that class. As the years went by not only did she get to know us ,but we also had the opportunity of having a greater understanding of her as well. When I started High School my sister told me one thing and it was "Make sure you get AVID with Douglas". I have been a student of Dianne Douglas for 4 years now and I can truly say she's a life changer. Ms. Douglas is the most dedicated teacher I have ever met, not only has she encouraged me in setting goals for college and creating a great future for myself but also in being a better person every day. She puts love and dedication into what she does and her students, everyone can see that. It's truly incredible how the moment I step foot in her class I feel like I'm at home with family not at school. I have had the pleasure and honor of working with Dianne Douglas for 26 years at John I. Leonard High School. Few things are more important than the education of our children and the environment in which they learn and no one knows this and better represents this than my colleague Dianne Douglas. She is extremely dedicated to her work and has helped make the school a better place for everyone. Her professionalism is unmatched and she takes her job as an educator very seriously and holds herself to a very high standard. Diane Douglas is an incredible professional whose love of teaching and her students is evident in everything that she does. Mrs. Douglas has truly made an impact on my life when I thought she would pass by as any another teacher. I started as a very shy and introverted student who wanted to talk to no one and Mrs. Douglas has done everything to support me and to make me feel at home inside a classroom. She finds a way to make the class become a family. She has also gone beyond just to find the best opportunities for her students. Her compassion is truly evident and felt with all her students and although we may not show it sometimes, we are truly grateful to have her as our teacher and even more blessed to call her our AVID mom. She definitely deserves this award.
As a former student and current colleague of Dianne Douglas, I can say with certainty that there is no one else as deserving of this award as her. As her students, she guided many others and myself not simply in the classroom, but also outside whenever we needed her- we knew we could always come to her with any problems we might have been facing, and she would genuinely care and try to help. Her teachings went so far beyond the classroom; it was not simply a matter of "Here is the lesson, learn it, and get ready for a test"- she would go above and beyond, giving us real world scenarios and advice that we still take with us to this day. (She would even offer us her phone number in case we ever found ourselves in any precarious situation!)
As a student, I knew very well that Dianne cared for and did more for her students than most other teachers, but now, as a colleague, I realize exactly just how much more effort, planning, and love it takes to really impact students in the way that she did- which makes it all the more admirable. As her coworker, I am blessed to be able to see Dianne work "behind the scenes"- how she undergoes the challenges all of us teachers face, and does absolutely everything in her power to provide her students with the most meaningful and fruitful learning experience. Her distinguished works go far beyond the scope of what is required as a school teacher, and I believe that makes her the most meritorious candidate for this award.

I have known Mrs. Douglas for a total of four amazing years. She has been a teacher, a mentor and a supporter to me. I had her son Mr. Douglas for my last two years of middle school, and even before I knew her, I instantly respected her. I heard so many positive stories about her and I admired how she went about things and brought so many joy into people's lives. I never knew then that she would in turn bring joy into my life.
During the four years that I have known Mrs. Douglas, I have come to realize a couple of things about her. She is extremely caring and goes out of her way to bless others, despite her agenda. Mrs. Douglas is the most kindhearted teacher in this school and community. She goes above and beyond for students. Not only does she make us feel safe, she makes every single student feel welcomed and loved. No one is an outcast because of their color, race, sexual orientation, etc. Mrs. Douglas is not biased and evidently gives all her efforts for the students at John I Leonard High School. Mrs. Douglas has made me realize that even if you do not get paid a lot with the career you’d like to do, it’s worth it because you are changing lives one at a time, and no amount of money can make up for that.
Mrs. Douglas is a caring teacher who does not only focus on the academic achievement of her students but also in their social/ emotional needs. She also supports an amazing student club here at John I Leonard High School. The" Rise and Shine" club meets at her classroom once per week in the mornings before school start.s. This club is student lead and the students who choose to attend had the opportunity to freely express their spiritual beliefs, needs and and are able to pray. So Ms. Douglas knows the importance of nurturing the students holistically helping them with their academic , social/emotional as well as spiritual needs and that makes Ms. Douglass a Life Changer individual.
As a new teacher to John I. Leonard HS, I was please to have encountered such a warm and kind person. Mrs. Douglas has always made me feel comfortable and offers words of encouragement when needed. Being a great role model, her genuine demeanor of concern and care has shaped the climate of her classroom; these characteristics can also be seen in the AVID students she instructs.

Dianne is definitely a very special person and teacher! I am her colleague at John I Leonard High School. I received AVID training as a science teacher about seven years ago. I have had the opportunity to participate in AVID activities with Dianne. Here I have seen her incredible drive to get things done for the benefit of students. Once she sets her eye on an outcome she won’t stop until it comes to fruition! I consider myself blessed to have known and worked with such a wonderful person and professional!
I met Mrs.Douglas my sophomore year of high school when I entered the avid program.As one of her past students I can truly say that she loved on me and everyone in my class like we were her own children.She was able to bring a class of strangers together and make them into a family. She is the most supportive and caring teacher I’ve encountered to day. Without her help I don’t know where I would be in college path. But, what I do know is that I have a degree because of Mrs.Douglas

I was a student in Mrs. Douglas' health class in 1989. I actually met my future husband on the way to her class. We were both walking out to her portable. Mrs. Douglas was an amazing and genuine teacher. She was very interested in getting to know each and every one of us as individuals. She was always willing to explain or have a conversation when there were questions. Later, as is would turn out both my older sister and I babysat for her own children as they lived in the same neighborhood as my grandparents. And the story continues...after teaching for 18 years in Wellington, I moved to PBG and ended up having both Mrs. Douglas' grandsons in my school. What a small world! And it all begin with the impact that a wonderful teacher had on a young high school student so many years ago!
I have worked with Dianne Douglas (I still call her Mrs. Douglas) for approximately 19 years. Mrs. Douglas is caring and nice to all her students no matter race, nationality, or economic status. As a teacher, you can always talk to her about the students you share or personal problems you are going through, and she will be there for you. When you think of Dianne Douglas, you definitely think of life changer.
I had Diane Douglas as my 9th grade health teacher back in the late 80's. She taught us many, many lessons that have stuck with me to this day---more than most any other class. She was so passionate about the content that you had to get involved. After college, I returned as a teacher and school technology coordinator, and it was in this role that I had had the privilege of working with her as a colleague. It was not surprising to discover that she was a respected leader on campus, just like she was inside her classroom. Her passion in the classroom carried to the school as a whole in her work on campus. Being in the unique position as both her student and colleague, I can say she is an all around rockstar---the kind of teacher and school-wide leader that take a school from good to great!
The nomination of Dianne Douglas as the "Life Changer of the Year" comes as no surprise to me. I have worked with Ms. Douglas for several years now and have witnessed first hand the tireless dedication that Ms. Douglas has for students on this campus. Back in 2011, the school's then Principal made me responsible for overseeing a new program called AVID. While I did not know much about the program, I did know that I needed to find an AVID teacher and coordinator that fit the description of the successful AVID teacher prototype. The person named would have to have the teacher skills to teach students in rigorous courses but with the "motherly" and "nuturing" attitude. The first person that came to mind that fits that description was Dianne Douglas.
Ms. Douglas happily took on that role and expanded the AVID program on our campus exponentially. Many students have given testimony to the fact that she indeed has changed the trajectory of their lives. If not for her, many of our students would not be attending schools like Notre Dame and Emory University. One of her students spoke of his AVID mother (Dianne) at an AVID summer conference in front of 5,000 teachers and educators from all over the country. This student comes back to our school regularly to speak to our students about his college experiences and credits Ms. Douglas for his successes.

Dianne has been instrumental in helping students from all walks of life be successfully admitted to college. She goes above and beyond to assist students and as a result, she is a counselor's right hand man. She sees students on a holistic level, not just academically, and connects with them in all they aspire. She attempts to know the family dynamic in her students' lives in order to better serve them. She has bettered many, many lives.

I have taught with Dianne for over 30 years. She is an amazing teacher, friend and co-worker. She is like a mom to all her students. When the students walk into her room they can feel the caring environment that she creates in her classroom. She is compassionate and inspires her students to attain their goals. She provides a tutoring program to assist those having difficulty in their academics. We have a very diverse population at our school and Dianne teaches her students to embrace and accept one another. Dianne encourages her students to volunteer in community events and to continue to do so, even after they graduate from high school. As the chairperson of the scholarship committee, she raises money each year to send students to college, who might not have had the finances to do so. Dianne gives hope and opportunities to her students, so they can have a better life. She teaches her students leadership, teamwork, and interviewing skills. If a student or their family needs food or clothing, she is the first one to help that family. She is the AVID Coordinator at our school and trains the other teachers in their AVID curriculum. She coordinates field trips to colleges and universities for her students. She puts in endless hours at school helping her students and other teachers. She has changed many lives throughout her teaching career.
I have known Dianne Douglas for 15 years. She is one of the most caring and thoughtful people I know. With many years of teaching experience, Dianne takes her role as a teacher very seriously. She is very respectful, a true professional and has been a mentor to so many others, myself including. I know she’s changed many lives. Mrs. Douglas was my health teacher and I have to say that she is an amazing human being! She took time to get to know each of her students on a personal level, which demonstrated that she truly cared. Her club, Arise and Shine, allowed me to learn more about God and the importance of faith. I am so thankful for her and the club because it made me a better person. I am also thankful that she pushed everyone to dream about college, particularly because some of us really needed that push. And, as a fellow math teacher, I was a witness of the countless activities and extra hours she put to have this program going for the benefit of many students. I have known Dianne Douglas since I was in Middle School when she taught at what used to be Southside Country Day in Jacksonville, Florida. That was 45 years ago! She was not only my mentor but also my part-time Mom. She noticed instantly I did not have the best home life and took me under her wing taking me to church, shopping for clothes, tutoring me, making sure I got to all sporting events and welcoming me into her home on many occasions throughout my childhood. I have told my friends and family many times that I don't know where I would be to this day without Dianne Douglas. We lost touch for many years but I have always keep her close to my heart. I met up with her last year on a trip to palm beach and we fell back into our wonderful relationship with me now an adult with children of my own. During that time, I got to know Dianne as one of the most outstanding teachers I have ever worked with throughout my entire career. She is an outstanding Health teacher who has made a positive difference in the lives of thousands of students throughout her career. Dianne saw a need at our school and implemented the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program. This program is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. Some of our students never considered college as an option for them. Dianne identifies those students and through her guidance and caring, numerous students have gone on to successful college experiences. Even after I retired I enjoy seeing photos of Dianne and her students taking college tours. You can see on the faces of her students how much they love and care for Dianne. Her teaching ability is outstanding and she is the personification of caring for both students and colleagues. She mentors many teachers and serves as an outstanding role model for everyone she encounters with her grace and poise. I have taught with Dianne for twenty years and there have been occassions when I've said to her, "If you did nothing else in your career you changed that one kid's life for sure." She's paid for college trips, bought formal attire, made interview skills a part of her curriculum, raised scholarship money to donate to students and countless other acts that go well above and beyond the call of duty. Several students lives have changed their trajectories so radically that entire families and generations to come will benefit from her influence. Those students show that there is no one more deserving of a "Life Changer" award than Dianne. She has also been a model teacher for over twenty years at our school and I'm sure she had the same influence on her previous campus. The AVID program at our school has been a blessing and she has been the motor behind all of the success that program has had at John I. Leonard. When she decides to retire there will be an empty space in our staff that will be very difficult to fill.
Dianne Douglas is truly a beautiful person both on the inside and out. As a new teacher at John I Leonard, Dianne was one of the first people that I encountered. She made me feel welcome and was always encouraging. Since those times I am happy to call her my friend. What she has done for the students in our school is amazing. We have so many kids that come from broken homes or just feel that they don't fit in at school. She makes them all feel welcome and part of her family here at John I Leonard. She gives these kids a place where they feel safe and they belong no matter what. She gives them the encouragement they need to flourish.
You have been a constant light for my students to seek extra guidance and support. When my students come to my college level course, they can feel confident knowing you have taught them what they need to succeed in such a rigorous course and you are there for additional support.

Dianne has impacted the lives of many of our students at John I Leonard as the lead teacher of our AVID program. She is dedicated, kind and caring. She creates a family like milieu in her class. Many students call her their "AVID Mom". If a student needs food, clothes, shoes, etc. Dianne makes sure that they get it. She understands that while a student is preoccupied the lack of basic needs he cannot give 100% to learning. A few years back, one of our students won a prestigious comprehensive college scholarship due in large part to the skills and guidance he received from Diane's Avid class. He was to go to a fancy dinner to receive his scholarship. Unfortunately, his family did not have the means to purchase suitable attire for this type of event. Dianne made sure that he had a brand new suit to wear. As you can imagine his acceptance speech was mainly about the guidance and affection that he received from Dianne. That is just one example in a sea of many that could be related with respect to Dianne's dedication and love for her students. I believe that you could not find a better candidate than Dianne for the "Life Changer" award,
I met Dianne when I was 12 years old. She saw something in me that I didnt know was there. At those vulnerable years in my life she was my coach, teacher and mentor. She taught me how to be courageous, brave and always inspired me to be the very best and try my hardest but most of all to never give up no matter what. She never gave up on me and to this day I will always remember her leadership and example in my life. She was my lifechanger for sure and continues to remain a strong pillar in my life. Mrs. Douglas has shaped my life in a way I did not think any teacher was capable of doing. She truly treated my obstacles like they were her own, and she did not stop until I was able to accomplish every single one of my goals in High School and beyond. We all called her our AVID Mom. And she did not fall short of that title! I had the pleasure of experiencing her hard-work and caring nature first hand, since I was in the AVID program for Four years. She helped us all prepare for college tremendously, and it is worth noting that she made sure I did everything to be admitted to the University of my dreams... which I did!
In summation, I believe there is no one more deserving of this award than Mrs. Dianne Douglas. She has not only changed my life, but she's been doing it for all her students for over Forty years. She is what many would call a true LIFE CHANGER.

I've only been her student for three months, and she has already had a positive impact on my school life. To be honest, I thought the class was boring at first, as the school year just started and I didn't want to do any work. However, as time passed, her class became more "interactive," as we started doing activities that would help us in and outside of school. I liked everything that we did, from the socratic seminars to talking in front of the class with any given topic. It was fun, and it helped me grow, both educationally and personally. She's a great teacher, and I hope for the best for her.

I am an AVID student and I have been a student of Ms.Douglas since 9th grade and she has been a really good and supportive teacher. Every time I was having troubles she would help me out and her lectures and teachings would impact me and my decisions as a student. In our class she created a caring family. She helps us and have made us be able to help each other. I respect her as much as a child respects their parents.
Mrs. Douglas is a really good teacher. I haven't had her for long like only this year since im a new student but she's already a really good teacher. I like her a lot and she's such a funny and charismatic person. From the moment I stepped into Mrs.Douglas's AVID 1, 5th period freshman class, I knew she would make significant impact on my education. She was diligent in teaching us, her students, the way of Cornell notes, organizational skills, and a further look into what is a college education and the experience as a future student at a four-year university. As I got to know her for the next three years, she has shown so much love, care, and affection for her students. Once she begins to lecture in front of the class, she projects her voice and always keeps eye contact with every person in the room, creating the perfect learning environment and engaging everyone in the room. Mrs. Douglas' certainly has a passion for teaching. In my eyes is essentially her life's work, and what one might call her calling in this world. She pours her heart and soul into this job, and enjoys it every single day for the school year. I am in AVID 4 as of right now and I have been in Mrs. Douglas class since the 10th grade. She has invested all of her in-school and out-of-school time on us by making sure we have the necessary tools to go onto college with the right mindset. I have had the pleasure of working with Dianne Douglas for 4 years and although that may not seem like a long enough time to know a person well enough, it is more than enough time to know she is deserving of the nomination for Life Changer of the Year. In my short experience with Mrs. Douglas, I have learned that she is a teacher that truly cares and no matter how many years she has been in education already, she hasn’t pulled back or stopped caring in any way. As education is constantly changing, Mrs. Douglas welcomes the change and embraces it. She is an innovator and trailblazer with the thriving AVID Program at our school, she seeks new ways to create scholarships for our students by collecting donations, and she organizes our Senior Awards night that always seems so seamless.

Our daughter Nicki was a good student but not motivated to aspire to academia.She entered Ms.Douglas's Avid program as uncertain of her abilities and lacking self confidence to take higher classes.Ms.Douglas has designed a program where teachers are handpicked by her team.These teachers teach children first academics second.
Nicki had lessons about self reflection and leadership.
She and all students lessons were planned according to their
academic weaknesses and strengths.
Nicki was involved in service classes and pay it forward by "Running for the Cure" and her service mission was to work with the Special Olympics.
By the time Nicki was at the end of her Sophomore year we saw
a beautiful young lady who was confident,determined to find a career to help the "least of these" She was ready for Cambridge classes and she excelled in the social sciences,
literature and writing.
By her junior year she visited many Florida Universities.She was accepted at Dusquene University in Pittsburg Pa,.Penn State and the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
She graduated with honors and is excelling in college.

Mrs. Douglas has been nothing short of a phenomenal teacher. If anything, she has gone above and beyond her job requirements—becoming not only a mentor to many of her students, but also a mother figure. She has been a huge inspiration to myself and even after having left her guidance to pursue a higher education, she is sill a prominent supporter in my life. She has always reminded me that I can do anything I put my mind to and I own many of my successes so far to her. She is most definitely highly deserving of such a nomination.

She has been there through all the challenging and joyous moments in my life. She has welcomed my family and I into her life without reservations. Wow! What a great tribute to a teacher who truly invests her whole heart into each student who crosses her path! She has not only changed the lives of the students in her classes but through them, she has touched the lives of so many more! And if that isn’t enough, she has changed the lives of the teachers with whom she works, inspiring us to be more caring of each other and of our students. She even started a “Care” team of teachers who donate gift cards to help financially insecure families in their times of need. She has selflessly helped countless students prepare for college interviews, organized drives to donate clothing and food to families affected by disasters or just hard times, pounded the pavement to obtain scholarships to help our low income but very worthy students pay for college, but most importantly, she has given her heart to every one of the her students, showing them what it is like to be loved and supported unconditionally. For many, she has been a surrogate parent encouraging them to always do their best no matter how hopeless things might appear. As a guidance counselor, I knew that each 9th grader scheduled into her health class would become part of her family of kids! Dianne Douglas is an amazing person. I was blessed to know this unique teacher throughout my career as a counselor, magnet coordinator, curriculum coordinator, and assistant principal at John I. Leonard High School. In the "beginning" when our school became the first Computer Technology Academy in Florida, Dianne was on the elite team of teachers entrusted with learning and teaching the newest technology of that time. Dianne loved the challenge and was always able to engage the students and impress the endless procession of observers from the Department of Education and District who would visit the class. This dedication and desire for excellence continued as Dianne volunteered to attend endless days at training sessions for each new pilot program developed over the years. So why has Dianne won so many awards as the most outstanding teacher? She is the one who sees, engages, and inspires each and every one of the diverse individuals who enter her room. She is a scientist analyzing their intellectual readiness, emotional tone, and physical energy to receive not only the curriculum but personal development lessons Dianne will artistically weave into the day to encourage self understanding, responsibility for actions, compassion for others, team cooperation, concrete planning, habits for success, and hope for a bright future. Dianne is a BOLD WARRIOR who will lovingly intrude into the lives of troubled people to find out what is wrong and do something about it. She generously gives gifts to others, will secretly buy clothes for a student to go to an interview, oversees the scholarship committee, and fearlessly approaches people to raise money for diligent students and parents who have no resources to pay for college. Dianne Douglas is one of a kind. As mentioned in other comments ,she is loving and caring with everyone.She represents this in actions with family and friends and for certain in her dealings with students on a daily basis. She was raised by loving parents who brought love and spiritual beliefs into her life at a very young age. She is the type person that puts her heart and soul in all areas of life. I probably know her better than most because I have had the privilege of being her brother for 66 years. Can not tell you if she is younger or older she might get mad. Love you sis!

Her passion is teaching, not only in the classroom, but wherever she might be. Mrs. Douglas was my health teacher in high school 4 years ago. When I started high school, I hated living in Florida and I was living in a broken home. After I left school at 3 PM, I did not want to go back to the home of my mother’s abusive partner, but I had no choice. What kept me sane, however, was going to school and having teachers like Mrs. Douglas. At the end of every health class, I knew that I had someone who would support me without knowing my circumstances. She was one of the most supportive teachers I have ever had, and thanks to teachers like her, I am a Gates Millennium Scholar that will be graduating from NYU in December with a B.A. in Psychology and pursuing a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. While she will be retiring after this year, I have no doubt that she will continue to impact many lives outside of school, and I know she will be dearly missed at John I. Leonard. The world needs more teachers like Mrs. Douglas.
When I became a teacher I had a vision of what kind of teacher I wanted to be. Having known Dianne for 20 years I'm still trying to become the teacher that she is....which is even better that the teacher I wanted to be 20 years ago.
When I first met Mrs. Douglas I was in her health class. She saw something in me that I wasn't able to see in myself at the time. She asked me to be part of the first AVID group that she formed. To this day I am so grateful to her for making me part of that group. She was there for all of us to help us grow into responsible adults and most importantly a family. She cares about every student and always helped with everything we needed even if it was something from other classes we did not understand. Mrs. Douglas went above and beyond to make sure that we were informed about different career paths, colleges, and scholarships. She encouraged us to try new things and become part of groups. I was also in Arise and Shine and this helped me stay in tune with real life problems and learn to get deal with them with God and not lose faith. I couldn't imagine going through high school without my AVID family nor the Arise and Shine family. She deserves this award! Mrs. Douglas is honest, caring, intelligent, and she loves what she does! She has inspired numerous students to believe in themselves and to reach higher than they would have reached without her influence. As a result, countless students have become better people and have been more successful than they would have been if they had not had her as a teacher.
I've known Dianne for 20 years. During that time I've watched her care, concern and commitment to her students. She lives and breathes the role of teacher in all things. I've met students whom were impacted and changed by Dianne's investment in their lives. Dianne embodies the role of life changer... for students, parents, community leaders. I'm a better person because of her care and concern for me and my family.
Mrs. Douglas is simply the best. I was lucky enough to have her as my health teacher in high school and she was one of the classes that I enjoyed going to every day. Even when I passed and moved on from her class, I joined her Arise and Shine club, not for any religious reason but simply so that I could still listen and learn from her as much as I could. I also moved on from that and graduated and now I get to work along side Mrs. Douglas every day as a fellow teacher. Working in the largest Title 1 school in PBC is very testing at times but when I think about people like Mrs. Douglas who have given themselves each day for over 30 years to this place, it keeps me motivated to keep giving. We all have the opportunity to change a small corner of the world and I truly believe Mrs. Douglas has changed large parts of the world.
Diane is a wonderful teacher and human being. She is very dedicated to her students and they love her dearly for it. This nomination fits her character perfectly.
When I started high school at John I Leonard High School I had moved from Virginia and was scared not knowing what to expect from a new state and starting high school. When I was asked if I wanted to join AVID I was excited because I knew it would be a close group of friends that would stay together and grow together through the years. This would not have been possible without my AVID mom. Mrs. Douglas is a warm caring soul, who gives her whole heart to each of her students. She gets to know each student personally and cares for their uniqueness never giving up on them. She pushed me to believe in myself and push beyond the boundaries I set for myself. She taught me to dream big and believe in myself. She also helped me grow and stay close in my faith through her Arise and Shine Program every Tuesday morning I Knew I had a sanctuary in her room. With little donuts she would always buy for us to enjoy while listening to the word of God and praying for eachother. I was part of the first AVID graduating class and I am forever grateful to Mrs. Douglas and the big wings she brought us under. She took care of us and because of her we all had an amazing high school experience. When AVID first started kids would make fun of us and say we were a special class, but by the time the first year ended, kids were begging to be accepted into the AVID class. And this is all because of Mrs. Douglas’s hard word and determination. By the time we were sophomores Mrs. Douglas brought in 2 more AVID classes and by the time we were graduating there was 2 more AVID teachers each with their own freshman and Mrs. Douglas with the rest of us. She always worked hard and persevered always with compassion and faith. I cannot think of a better soul who deserves this award especially now since it is her last year teaching and all her hard work has paid off and the seeds she planted in so many students have bloomed into wonderful blessings.
I am a former AVID and Health student of Mrs. Douglas. Early in my high school career, I had the desire and drive to succeed, but did not know in what or how. Mrs. Douglas helped give me guidance and direction and I am now currently a student at the University of Notre Dame. Mrs. Douglas is a true LifeChanger.
Dianne is my aunt by marriage. She has been a life changer long before she began teaching in south Florida. When I was a teenager she was a safe and wise voice in my life. She always provided wise and gentle guidance to a young teenager who needed a positive and approachable role model. I am so thankful for the gift of Dianne in my life.

I have been friends with Dianne Douglas since we were 13 years old. We have gone through many happy and sad times together. Even though we have been separated by miles for the last 51 years our friendship has not only endured, but prospered. It says so much about her and her ability to love and encourage! I am so thankful for the privilege of calling her my friend. We have seldom had a conversation that she didn't talk about her amazing students and how much she loved them...I have several friends that have been teachers, but none with the devotion that Dianne has shown. She deserves every honor that can be bestowed on a teacher and I am so happy for her to be nominated for this amazing award of Life Changer...not only has she changed the life of her students, but also her friends.
Ok, Dianne Douglas is my mother and I have known her for 42 years. My mom has always put her family first, but her students and her school community are a close second. She has taught at John I Leonard for 30 years now- and I have had the privilege of sending some of my former 8th graders to her 9th grade classes for the last ten years. You see, after seeing her example as an educator, mentor and life changer I decided to enter the profession of teaching. After years in Tampa (where I did my graduate work and first four years teaching) my wife and I moved back to lake worth to be near my family and start ours. In between clubs, scholarship committees, Avid college readiness field trips (all over Florida) my mother thrives on time with family and even volunteers to watch our children and my sisters’ children on a regular basis. She has certainly been a role model to me and has showed me how to invest my life into those of my students and how to be classy as a professional. She is an amazing woman and a top notch educator. My mom, Dianne Douglas has changed more lives than she even knows.
My son began his sophomore year here at John I. Leonard. I received a copy of his schedule during pre-school and I noticed that he had not been placed in Dianne Douglas' health/hope class. Immediately I went to Data and requested that he placed in Dianne Douglas' class as I wanted him to have the quality program she presented as well as the values she shared through her words, actions and lessons. During Paul's freshman year at Palm Beach Community College (not named Palm Beach State College) he chose health as one of his elective classes. After a few weeks of being in class, the professor asked Paul where he had learned so much about health? Paul told he that he had taken healthy in high school. The professor asked him where he had attended high school. When Paul replied, "John I. Leonard", the professor then asked, "Who was your teacher?" Paul replied, "Mrs. Douglas". The professor smiled and said, "Now I understand why you know so much!"
Throughout her many years at JIL, Dianne has worn many hats. She is the founder of Arise and Shine, a non-denominational club which meets every Tuesday morning before school. This club is open to students and staff. Dianne is also the Scholarship Committee Chairperson. Under her tutelage and direction, many John I. Leonard students have received scholarships for college. She has been in charge of both Senior Night and Graduation Day Faculty Lineup for numerous years. This Lifechanger is a Dwyer Award Winner who coaches JIL Dwyer Award Nominees through the daunting application process and essays. She attends the Dwyer Awards every year.
Dianne Douglas is AVID. Not only does she exclusively teach AVID now, she had recruited many faculty members, including me, to become AIVD trained.
Dianne is a role model for students and faculty. She exemplifies true Southern charm and hospitality. Throughout the years, she coordinated the monthly Girls Night Out events and dinners. Once a year, she opened her home for a special Girls Night Out.
Dianne and I are next door neighbors here at JIL. She is someone who I can depend up for support, advice, a smile, curriculum, etc. Throughout the years my students, who aren't in AVID, have wondered why is can sometimes be noisy in her classroom (the walls are thin). I smile and tell them that the students are involved in an AVID activity: lively Socratic Seminars, Team Building Activities, some of which I have been asked to judge, etc.
This nominee has been a life changer for generations of students, their families, and the JIL family.
