Music that Describes Robert

Robert Kouril was nominated by a colleague, Martin Pejerrey.

"The three words that describe my friend would be dedication, innovation, and perseverance," said Pejerrey. "In a year, Robert has demonstrated all the aforementioned words by forming a hiking club for the kids of this school to venture to places they would never visit on their own. The students hike in locations outside the tri-state area that require transportation organized in his spare time, a luxury teachers don't have nowadays."

"Further, this school is a Title I school with 85% of its students falling below the poverty rate," said Pejerrey. "Robert refused to deny these students the ability to hike despite not having the proper gear. He, in return, established a GoFundMe account, receiving donations from all over the states. Robert used the money to purchase proper gear for the students and received hiking boots for the students with the most needs. His generosity does not end there; he also provides students with bottled water for hydration during all events. Because of his hiking club, I have been taking daily walks to reduce my fatty levels to avoid other unforeseeable harmful conditions. Hence, my nomination for Robert for possibly saving my life or a condition that may have lessened my timespan in this world."

Mr. Kouril is more than just a teacher from Newtown. To colleagues, he is supportive and caring. Mr. Rob is far more than a teacher; he's a trailblazer in the literal and metaphorical senses of the word. When I joined his hiking club as a freshman in 2012, freshly arrived in a new country and culture, I felt utterly lost—emotionally and geographically. Mr. Rob extended a compass of wisdom, teaching me to navigate trails and the winding paths of life. His guidance didn't point to shortcuts or accessible routes but toward paths that built strength and character. A pivotal moment was conquering a black diamond course at Long Island Adventure Park. This wasn't just about heights but about breaking my limits. Thanks to Mr. Rob, I now lead my own hikes, sharing the life-changing lessons he taught me. He doesn't just impact lives for a school year; he changes them forever. What sets him apart is his commitment to inclusivity. He goes the extra mile, sourcing hiking gear from local businesses for those who couldn't otherwise afford it. This isn't just charity; it's a profound act of leveling the playing field and breaking down socioeconomic barriers so everyone can experience the empowerment that comes from conquering nature's challenges. Because of Mr. Rob, I've come to appreciate the majesty of nature and the intrinsic qualities of resilience, community, and leadership. Now, I take it upon myself to lead others on hikes, passing on the invaluable lessons he imparted. In Mr. Rob, I didn't just find a teacher for a school year; I found a mentor for life.

Mr. Kouril has created the hiking club to give students an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. With each hike, the number of students increase. It is a fun way for them to be together and get to learn about their environment along the way. This club give students a chance to get out of the city to be in nature, even if it's only for the day. Memories are being created that will last a lifetime. Who knows? One of the students may grow up to form their own hiking club, therefore continuing the legacy that I am sure Mr. Kouril would be proud of. Kuddos to him; may he continue to inspire and impress upon the minds of young people positively. #LCOY

Mr.Kk. Has been an inspiration and a reminder that hard work and sacrifices when you are young can lead you to a successful life when you become adult. The hiking club that he have found himself, allow me to the opportunity to connect again with nature. Which I love it, part of my depression, stayed on the concrete jungle, and my happiness has been founded on the wood, next to my hiking mates and Mr.Kk

Mr. Kouril is very dedicated teacher and fought diligently to have the hiking club at Newtown. Each school year students and staff look forward to hike and explore New York with the guidance of Mr. Kouril. Many of our students are new to the country and do not have the opportunity to go to new places. With the hiking club, he encourages them to become part of the Newtown community, practice English, and appreciate natural. Many of our students come from a low socioeconomic zone, and Mr. Kouril was able to get people to donate hiking gear and in many occasion he costed the bus dues because students wanted to go the hiking trip but dint have money to pay for transportation. Each year the amount of students signing up grow thanks to the encouragement of Mr. Kouril.

Jonathan Kini Posted over a year ago

Robert is simply passionate about educating his students, passionate about where he works and the backgrounds of the students he teaches, and merges this with his passion for hiking and the outdoors. He often speaks about how some of his students have just landed in the US and are experiencing hiking in places like the Palisades within their first week of being here. Equipment and experience are non-issues. He teaches safety first on his hikes and has gathered enough equipment through donations and partnerships with REI and their customers that students have the gear and shoes they need. He is equally skilled and understanding in the math classroom.

Margaret Posted over a year ago

As Rob’s younger sister, I can tell you he has always been a leader. Growing up, he cared for me like a father would. Despite struggling with learning disabilities, he persevered and went on to teach students that have those same challenges. He can connect with students because he has experienced overcoming those challenges. He started the hiking club, which blends his passions for the outdoors and for the students. He uses humor, patience, knowledge to provide amazing experiences for these students. Many have never been hiking. These hikes connect the teens to the outdoors but also help build a community with their school. Rob does all the fundraising and research for these hikes. He is the most dedicated teacher!

In the more than 20 years that I've known Mr. Kouril, I can't recall a single day that he has been absent. Both the children he teaches and his colleagues feel the caring, sense of humor, and dedication that Mr. Kouril possesses in spades. To top this already impressive list off, Mr. Kouril is very altruistic. When he is not teaching, Mr. Kouril dedicates countless weekend days to taking Newtown High School students to scenic spots for hiking excursions; it is highly unlikely these students would ever have seen these spots on their own. Mr. Kouril devotes so much time and energy to fundraise for hiking gear that students need, not to mention the other logistics of organizing hikes such as arranging for school buses. His Hiking Club is very popular, so Mr. Kouril is contributing immeasurably to Newtown High School school spirit. Mr Kouril deserves the LifeChanger of the Year award for his immense contributions to the physical, mental, and social well being of so many at Newtown through his Hiking Club.

Students from Newtown all rave about the hiking club. The club wouldn't exist without the help and guidance of our amazing teacher --- Mr. Kouril. He has organized hundreds of hiking trips since the foundation of the club. He has brought life-changing experiences to so many students. He deserves winning the award!!!

As a new teacher at Newtown High School, one of the first people that I met was Mr. Kouril. His passion for teaching was immediately recognized. Upon learning of our shared interest in hiking, and that he was the driving force behind Newtown's Hiking Club, I saw yet another element of his enthusiasm being an educator. We understand the importance of "getting out there" for our inner city students, many of whom rarely leave the confines of their own urban neighborhood. As a Living Environment (Biology) teacher, avid hiker and outdoorsman, and former Eagle Scout, I'm happy to help support Mr. Kouril's initiatives offered by the unique and very valuable program that is the Hiking Club here at Newtown High School in Queens, New York City.

Ms. Toloza Posted over a year ago

#LCOY I've had the opportunity to join Mr. Kouril on a school hike and though very challenging he is able to get students to rise to the challenge every time and see that they are capable to reach the summit. He inspires them to push themselves beyond what they think they are capable of doing. The hikes also take a great deal of coordination and he manages to lead, sometimes 50+ students, in an organized and safe manner to enjoy a day of exercise and exploration. Students, who normally never leave their local neighborhoods, are shown a world they've never see and can appreciate the great outdoors. Mr. Kouril makes this all possible by simply sharing his passion with the students at Newtown High School.

I am fortunate to have Mr. Kouril found and organize our most popular and enriching club at Newtown HS, the Hiking Club. This club has been running for twelve years through the sheer dedication of Robert Kouril. Mr. Kouril has guided thousands of students and staff on over a hundred hikes during that time. It is a wonderful opportunity for students and staff to bond, connect with nature, making connections between the earth science curriculum and the real world and most importantly have an amazing, life changing experience. In fact, Mr. Kouril has touched so many Newtown lives, that former alumni and businesses from the community have donated over 200 pairs of hiking boots so that all students have an opportunity to participate in this amazing club. #LCOY

My connection with Mr. Kouril runs deeper than words can express. Throughout my high school journey, Mr. Kouril wasn't just a teacher; he was a beacon of inspiration and a driving force behind the transformative experiences that defined my adolescence. Mr. Kouril's hiking club, the brainchild of his boundless passion, ignited a fire within us. For many of us, coming from backgrounds where hiking was an alien concept, those trips opened doors to a world we never knew existed. They were more than just hikes; they were journeys of self-discovery and communal growth. Each expedition, guided by Mr. Kouril's unwavering commitment, was a tapestry of adventure, learning, and unforgettable moments. The wild beauty of nature unfolded before our eyes, and with each step, we learned to conquer not just the trails but also our own limitations. Mr. Kouril's infectious enthusiasm for the great outdoors transformed those outings into educational odysseys. He wove lessons about resilience, teamwork, and the profound interconnectedness of life into every adventure. His mentorship extended far beyond the classroom, shaping our characters and instilling in us a profound appreciation for the world around us. But this isn't just about the past; it's about the future. The $10,000 award isn't just a monetary prize; it's a lifeline for the hiking club he founded. It's an opportunity to keep the torch of inspiration burning bright for future students. Most of the kids at our school, hailing from low-income families, would never have had the chance to explore the great outdoors without Mr. Kouril's dedication. In a world that often overlooks the quiet heroes among us, Mr. Kouril stands as a towering example of selflessness and commitment. He didn't embark on this journey for accolades or recognition; he did it because he believes in the transformative power of education and nature. By honoring him with the LifeChanger of the Year award, we're not just celebrating one man's achievements; we're investing in the dreams and futures of countless students who will follow in our footsteps. Mr. Kouril is more than a teacher; he's a life-changer, a mentor, and a friend. His impact reaches far beyond the classroom walls, and I am eternally grateful for the indelible mark he's left on my life and the lives of so many others. He doesn't just deserve this award; he embodies its very essence.

As an alumni of Newtown High School, when I first met Mr. Kouril, I was immediately impressed by his confidence and eagerness to teach and willingness to exceed standard expectations. He is a stellar teacher to his students and community. Finding a friend besides a teacher is always a gift. I was fascinated with the hiking club. I highly recommend Robert Kouril for this award. I have known him for two decades, and I have found him to be helpful and supportive both to the staff at large, and especially to his students. As a teacher of self-contained students as well as ICT classes, he has developed a remarkable rapport with his students and helped them to excel in mathematics. Beyond that, he has fought tooth and nail to bring the Hiking Club back after the COVID hiatus. Our students grow up in very urban areas and the Hiking Club gets them to enjoy the natural world that lies outside of the city limits. He has grown the club to over 100 students who love to go on hikes, and stays in touch with former members who still go on hikes with him. Additionally, he started a Go Fund Me to outfit our underprivileged students with hiking boots and other hiking equipment so that no one had to hike in worn out sneakers or shoes. He truly has been an inspiration for his students, for the hiking club, and for other teachers at Newtown.

And the fact that the alumni come to participate in the hiking club even though they have already graduate is one of the fact that should be highlighted. He has the power and motivational spirit that even alumni can't forget and want to experience more on the hiking trip with him. He engraves the spirit of exploring into the hearts of many many students. Mr. Kouril really really deserves this award. This is the only way we can thank him for his outstanding work and what he did for all those years. #LCOY

Mr. Kouril is not only a colleague, but a friend. The work that he does inside the classroom to motivate his students is matched only by his dedication and commitment to the Hiking Club. He works tirelessly to fundraise, collect donations, organize transportation, plan hikes, process paperwork, and so, so much more...all to foster a love of the great outdoors in our students -- to show them parts of our state that they would ordinarily never get to experience. Kudos, friend! Keep doing the amazing things you do!

Shout out to Kouril! He fought like hell to bring back hiking to Newtown. Most of our students dont have the opportunity to see the world in its most natural form. Waterfalls, rivers, tress, woods are all something that's a scene in a movie for them. But to actually walk the paths? To feel the crackling branches beneath their feet, or a view at the apex of a mountain are small experiences with big impact. Being in a low socioeconomic zone, Kouril was able to encourage donors to donate boots for students who otherwise wouldn't have been able to afford it. I've watched this club grow in size and impact and I can't wait to see what's next in store!

Mr. Kouril is a great hiking club leader. He funds some of the bus fee out of pocket to make the trips not expensive for student families!!! He is a truly wonderful person in my opinion. My son really likes hiking clubs. It gives kids a chance to leave the city and see some of the beautiful nature around us.

I wanted to share my thoughts about Robert Kouril, an extraordinary teacher who has had a profound impact on my life and countless others. This teacher served as the leader of our high school's hiking club, where he not only managed the logistics for a group of over 30 students but also took on the responsibility of fundraising, especially for students like me who came from low-income households. His dedication and passion were nothing short of remarkable. He handled all the finances and paperwork with unwavering commitment, ensuring that we had the opportunity to explore the great outdoors and learn valuable life skills. Beyond the classroom, he inspired us with his love for teaching, instilling in us a deep appreciation for subjects like mathematics and earth science. The influence of this teacher has lasted long beyond our high school years. I, for one, am still exploring the world through hiking, thanks to the inspiration and guidance I received from him. He's shown me how to live my best possible life, and I have no doubt that he will continue to positively impact the lives of many more students. In my opinion, Kouril truly deserves the title of "Life Changer of the Year." His dedication to education and his students is nothing short of exemplary, and I believe it's important to acknowledge his remarkable contributions.

Mr. K and hiking club was the best part of my highschool life. Every highschool needs a teacher like him. He treats everyone equally and makes you feel like you belong there. I was a quiet and lonely kid but he always paid attention to me and my safety as much as he did to other kids. I am very grateful to him and the club and he deserves to win.

I know Robert since many years and it is exciting to see how he merged two of his lifelong passions into something much bigger. His love for outdoor & nature and his dedication & relentless efforts, teaching kids with difficult backgrounds basics they must have in order to have a chance in life combined are worth praise, admiration & support. Many of those NYC kids would likely never in their life connect with nature if it wasn't him building that bridge for them. All of us who already have that connection with nature know how beautiful it is out there, how much excitement, piece of mind, support, tranquility & strengths Mother Nature holds available for us. Most of us who grew up in the countryside or those who's parents put in a concious effort to take them out there are probably not even thinking about the barriers (e.g. money for the bus ride, shoes, clothes...) those city kids with challenging social backgrounds are facing when it comes to connecting with nature. They simply need help to establish that connection and this is exactly what Robert keeps doing. If it is setting up a GoFundMe page, putting in extra hours and lots of personal time or connecting with politicians to raise awareness and funds, it is so much more any of us can expect from a regular school teacher. He is truly making a difference and my praise and admiration goes out to Robert as well as anyone supporting him in his mission. He is and has been a real "LifeChanger" to so many.

Mr.Robert Kourill is a great teacher. He is a very hard working and fun teacher which makes the lesson interesting to learn. For example, he provides various examples and explains them in a different way so all the students can understand very well. On top of that, he’s been organizing a hiking club in the “Newtown High School” which gave us a lot of opportunities to learn more about nature and fun exercises and explorations for different educational purposes. I would really nominate Mr. Rob Kouril.

Robert Kouril, a carefree, full of life, and generous man, who’s also an amazing math teacher, has truly put in the work and effort for high school students to broaden their horizons and go on long trips that have them experience more of the world. I can only imagine how difficult negotiations were when trying to make this a reality but thankfully, it worked out in the end and students are able to reach new heights in nature in their lives. The impact he’s made speaks for itself and he’s accomplished a dream while students are having fun in the dream he’s worked for. He’s more than deserving of this nomination.

Robert Kouril, is not just a name but a symbol of passion. His passion for the outdoors and his students have shaped and changed the lives of many. Many, including my own. I met Mr. Kouril when I was in high school. I am now a 30 year old woman who still enjoys long hikes, running and ultra marathons and without a doubt implement the love for the outdoors to my children. Thanks to Mr. Kouril running 50 miles on Bear mountain did not feel like a challenge when the time came. He inspired my love for the outdoors as being a city kid, I did not even know what a trail marker looked like. Such thing can save your life! Meeting and being part of the Newton Hiking Club with Mr. Kouril was one of the most beautiful and unique experience not many High school kids have. I hope my single experience can help you understand the magnitude of change Mr. Kouril and the hiking club bring to many lives. Please feel free to reach out if you have further questions.

Mr. Kouril is the right person to be a leader of hiking club. Things I know about him is he always goes to different places and he knows about hiking very well. He takes medical supplies in case if his student gets hurt. Mr. kouril is the best hiker I know.

The hiking club has been amazing I never thought that one day I would end up liking a club that went to different places and actually go hiking because I’m not the type of person that even likes to go walk to school half the time but Robert or as we call him mr k has given everything towards this club and to us like he managed to get people to donate hiking shoes for all of us in the club, he has made shirts and magnets for us all as well and probably one of the most important things he has done for us was he has given us all a safe place to go to wether that is someone to go to when we need help with school or if we need help with someone bullying us or if it is just someone we can talk to when we are feeling down and just need a pick me up and because of all this that mr k has done me and my dad actually went on a hike our selfs and it was the most fun I had in a while it was also the funniest thing I have ever seen my dad do and it was all because of mr k and his club

I have known Robyn as both an educator, and a friend for more years than I would ever want to admit… We both entered education at the same time. His commitment to helping youth find the best parts of themselves is inspiring. The fact that he not only helps some of our struggling students embrace math, but he takes students into the wilderness of the embrace, the essence of who they are is exactly what our world needs. And hearing what he’s done with the hiking club doesn’t surprise me as that’s just who he is. From when I met him to now he cared. As a former member of the Hiking Club under Mr. Kouril's guidance, I can attest to the incredible impact he has had on my life and the lives of many others. Kouril has made an indelible mark on my high school experience, and I can confidently say that without him, those years would have been significantly less memorable. Before joining the club, I had never experienced hiking, and thanks to Robert's leadership, we embarked on numerous unforgettable hikes throughout the tri-state area. His Hiking Club introduced me to a world of adventure and exploration I had never known before, leaving me with cherished memories and a newfound love for the great outdoors. The breathtaking views we encountered left a lasting impression on all of us. What truly sets Robert apart is his unwavering support for student leadership and organization within the club. He not only introduced us to the joys of hiking but also empowered us to take on leadership roles, teaching us valuable skills that extend far beyond the trails. Robert Kouril's dedication to fostering personal growth and his commitment to student leadership make him a true life-changer and an inspiration to all who have had the privilege of being part of the Hiking Club.

He's providing kids from all corners of the globe with incredible experiences they'd never have imagined. From summiting peaks to exploring hidden trails, Mr. Kouril is opening up a world of adventure right in our backyard. Kudos to this trailblazer!

I was fortunate to have Mr. Robert as my Math teacher in freshmen year in high school. He is one of the best mentors I have ever met. He connected with all the students in class in a way that made us all really comfortable and engaged to reach out to him with anything we were having problems with. Not only in classroom, he has given students the opportunity to explore in nature through hiking. I wouldn’t have known how much I love nature if it wasn’t for him. After high school, I fall into depression during my college years and after struggling a while I went back to hiking on my own trusting what Mr. Robert taught me during our high school hiking trips from hiking club. That was the moment I realized hiking could be a key component to recover from depression for me. I couldn’t be more grateful to Mr. Robert that day. He taught me something that I will carry forever and get benefit out of it to improve my lifestyle. I wouldn’t have learned from my parents who brought me to United states as immigrants. There are so many students like me who were able to explore that part of them because of Mr. Robert. If anyone deserves the fund, it’s Mr. Robert who has devoted his time and energy for his students and went beyond to help us explore more in the world.

Students in this hiking club have been able to experience a whole New World in nature. They are enjoying the beauty of being in the woods, the challenge of a hike, caring for environment, teamwork, the kindness of people. This is a priceless source of education that could not be found in a classroom setting. Robert’s hiking club has positively influenced the lives of past students and it continues to enrich the lives of the students in the club today. alumni students continue to keep in touch and have gone on to incorporate the challenge of hikes and other adventures in their lives today all from the foundation of this hiking club. Well done! In many cases, this hiking club, his fueled an interest that most of the students never even knew they had within them. It is a priceless experience.

My colleague Robert Kouril is an amazing human being who wants to instill in his students and everyone around him a love of hiking. I’ve had the pleasure of taking part of these trips and have seen first hand how our students are lucky to be part of this experience. Robert works diligently in putting together hikes that challenge students both physically and mentally, to build in each student an awareness of what they are capable of achieving while learning about nature and topography. Our students come from all over the world and are building a sense of community that goes beyond the classroom. His dedication is contagious and every member of the Hiking Club is lucky to have the opportunity to see the state of New York in a new light.

I work at a nearby public high school that has a similar population which is also a Title 1 school. It is amazing to me how so many of our students have not left urban Queens, nevermind had the opportunity to see what the world looks like without buildings, streets and sidewalks. Mr. Kouril is creating memories for these students, helping them stay physically fit, and literally widening their horizons. Bravo!

Robert provides opportunities for a healthy lifestyle that our students may otherwise never experience. He has changed lives for children by providing them with something fun and different. He spends so much of his own time and money ensuring that dozens upon dozens of students have proper gear and life changing experiences. These kids would never have these opportunities without his dedication.

Moses Posted over a year ago

Mr.Kouril is a great teacher and also a nice person to learn many things. One of those things includes hiking/being outdoors. Mr.kouril wanted to have an activity where students could get to enjoy nature and experience new views of the world from outside of a classroom so the hiking club seemed to be the perfect idea, with his experiences and knowledge of hiking and also being a teacher who his students respect it is the perfect combination. Therefore the perfect life changer nominee would be Robert Kouril, who stands behind helping his students while leading them into an endless adventure and to make it better hiking gear would be a plus

From teaching special ed to taking his students outdoors and teaching them about hiking and nature. Always enthusiastic about learning and teaching. For myself, he has been a great friend, almost father figure, and mentor, to a large group of since way back in college. Prolific in music, history, mathematics and the outdoors.  His hiking team, which he takes care of every detail, has grown exponetially. I remember it was  just a few students, to what appears a full student body. He has always loved the outdoors and has always wanted to share all the things that come to benefit everyone involved in the long run.

One of the most valuable life moments And feelings were captured taking a hike in these club.

Vik Harmon Posted over a year ago

I am a friend of Mr. Kouril and although the reasons for the nomination are great, it only party tells the story. His Hiking Club is more than just for hiking. The goal is to get inner city students out of the poverty ridden areas and expand their world. The two parts that I really enjoyed hearing about was the connection he builds in the students to the environment and their world. He has shown me pictures of all the trash they cleaned up off the trails. The other thing is connecting their learning in the classroom to real world experiences. They talk about earth science and the history of the area. Lastly, he has been doing this for over 10 years and has taken thousands of students on these hiking field trips. His dedication to his students and school has always been inspiring to me.
