Joseph Balchunas was nominated by his friend, Debra Aleman.

Although choosing one grand gesture to support Mr. Balchunas' nomination as a Life Changer would be very easy, it's not only about that one grand gesture or that one heroic, selfless act that sets him apart as an extraordinary principal, educator and LifeChanger. It's the years and years of countless daily gestures, selflessness, respect and dedication to children and education that sets him apart. It's about a philosophy of making every student feel special, worthy and capable on a daily basis.

Mr. B, as he is affectionately known by all, is a true child advocate who supports his staff 110%. His enthusiasm and energy is palpable and infectious, and upon meeting him, you can’t help but want to take part in his world. Mr. B knows the names of each and every one of his students. He has a gift for relating to and reaching children of all ages, and he does so every single day with encouragement, gentleness and a smile. He has found the perfect balance between authority figure and friend.

Mr. B can be found in the car line with an umbrella on rainy days, visiting students during lunch, and simply walking around campus. He keeps up with students' progress, making a point to congratulate a job well done and offering a hug and words of encouragement if needed! Not only is he brilliant and creative, but he always goes the extra mile as a principal, boss and mentor. His philosophy is "the sky is the limit" and he always leads by example.

Mr. B’s door is always open, and he is the first to arrive each day and the last to leave at night. He works tirelessly toward the betterment of students and education in general, and is a positive influence and an inspirational leader.

"It is one thing to reach the apex of facilitating and operating a school," Aleman said. "It's yet another to do it in a way that inspires others, that breeds success in everyone he comes in contact with. His efforts and infectious drive have created many parent leaders within our District."

Mr. B is driven to see that his school not only excels at educating children, but that it's a beacon for other schools to emulate. Based on his reputation and record of proven excellent performance, Mr. B was moved by the superintendent a few years ago to an “F” grade school, in an effort to save the school from closure by the State. In only two years, he has moved the school to a “C” grade and changed the dynamics entirely!

He has assembled a winning staff of educators, created countless volunteer opportunities for parents, obtained grants and started innovative and exciting programs for the students. His life is entirely dedicated to education and student success! He consistently models excellence, expects it, provides opportunities to ensure it happens, and then celebrates success. When that success happens, he shares it with everyone. He inspires and motivates others to demand the most of themselves. He is the epitome of excellence as a leader, as an educator, as a person, and as a friend. Mr. B changes the lives of everyone privileged to meet him for the better!
