Ms. Mickens has been in education for 22 years. She's served as a teacher, graduation coach, and guidance counselor. In each role, she has been concerned about the student's social well-being. She has sponsored a mentoring program since 2002 that sets students up with staff and community partners that work with the students with life and their emotional needs.
"Ms. Mickens is very involved, not only in her community, but other communities, lending a hand to anyone in need," stated Scales Baranco.
My daughter loved Ms Mickens when she was at Newton. She really has a heart for kids and shows them that she cares and has their best interest in mind. Congrats and well deserved Ms Mickens
Ms. Mickens was my 10th grade counselor. she means the world to me and I don’t know what I would do without her. She’s always there for me when I needed her the most, she is like another mom to me because of her Unconditional love and affection. She shaped me into being the Confident dedicated student/athlete I am today and I just want to take time to say thank you for changing my life, Love you dearly.
I think Ms.Mickens should win because when I first got to Newton she helped me in so many ways that changed my life. She’s caring , funny, a great person to talk too if your going through things mentally and physically. She done had my back so many times that I can’t count on my fingers. She’s like a second mother to me and still to this day she texts me to check up on me. She kept me on track, pushed me to do better, and encouraged me to graduate when it was multiple times I would give up. She really needs to win, she’s a life changer and a big part of my life. When I felt like I didn’t have nobody Ms.Mickens was right there to listen to all my problems. I would go to her and cry so many times and she was always there to comfort and talk to me. I really do appreciate Ms.Mickens.

Ms. Mickens was my 9th grade English teacher. I moved a lot as a child and never really got a solid shot to be “good” at anything—this included school. Her class was the first time I had a teacher take the time to connect with me and I thrived. It was my first time feeling smart and I excelled. Her class and teaching gave me the confidence I needed as a foundation to my future educational successes.
Ms. Mickens was my 9th grade English teacher and I can truly say she made a major impact on my life. She helped me gained confidence in myself. I'll love her forever. One of my favorite teachers!!
Ms. Mickens touched my heart many years ago and has continued to influence my life today. She has always had a way of being genuine and relatable with students while encouraging us to reach our full potential. She was my English teacher that continued to mentor beyond the classroom. Ms. Mickens was my 9th grade teacher back in 2005 the experience is unmatched I still remember the poem project we had to do. She has been more than a great teacher but also an amazing role model.

Ms. Mickens is the epitome of an exceptional educator, and committed counselor. Her impact does not stop once her students excel to the next grade level. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Many of us find comfort knowing the sincerity behind her support is not limited to the 180 days of a school year. We seek her counsel years (even decades) after having been graced with her as a teacher. Ms. Mickens has helped me with everything from which color background to choose for my project, to coping with the passing of my baby sister.
An expertise so powerful, so profound as not only being able to reach/connect with adolescents but facilitate in molding them into the best versions of themselves should not be taken “with a grain of salt”. It is a craft that should be highlighted, praised and encouraged.
I truly am blessed to have had her as a teacher so many years ago. I can only pray my children encounter their own “Ms. Mickens” throughout their educational journeys. One way to ensure that is to shine a light on those going above and beyond for the students.

Ms. Mickens! What can you say about such a phenomenal educator? Caring, patient, makes learning fun and knows how to reach each of her students one by one. As a former student of Ms. Mickens, I can without a doubt say, that she is my one of my motivations in the classroom. I often pull from my memories of her in the classroom when teaching my class.
Ms.Mickens is an amazing pillar in the life of every youth she touches. I was blessed to have Ms.Mickens as a Teacher and Future Educator program administrator and life mentor. I was Ms. Mickens’s supervising teacher when she did her student teaching. She was an outstanding teacher from the beginning earning her students’ respect with meaningful differentiated instructions, discipline, and a solicitous spirit. She had a way of influencing positive feedback and performance from her students. We offered her a contract to teach at our school as soon as she graduated. Erica had an excellent rapport with the students, staff, and parents. She rose to the status of star teacher and department chair very quickly. In her role as counselor, I am sure that Erica is continually making a positive impact on the lives of students and colleagues as she has done for over twenty years.
She is both an exceptional person and educator! Children first is a motto that readily describes her. Ask anyone about her and a big smile evolves. As an English teacher, she was outstanding as she made literature come alive for all. She was creative and task oriented as she taught and excelled in teaching male gender classes. Highly recommend!
There are so many words to describe Ms. Mickens, but the word I would use is dependable. In 2011, I lost my father to cancer, and it was the most heartbreaking pain I had ever been through. But Ms. Mickens was the one who was there for me, especially during times when I needed her the most. Ms. Mickens has been an ear to everyone who was ever in need. She is by far more than just a good mentor, counselor, teacher, and graduation coach. She is a good person who is willing to be an aid you need.

I first met Ms. Erica Mickens in 2007 as a Freshman back when I had attended Stone Mountain High school she was my English Language Arts Teacher I recall her having the class recite The Poem Invictus by William E. Hensley I knew it rite off the back since 1996 she and the class where quite surprise that I knew the poem. She is definitely well deserved of this Honor I still have her note she gave me.

Ms. Mickens is my high school classmate but also works at my daughter’s school who has since graduated. During my daughter’s time there, even though Ms. Mickens was not the counselor for my daughter’s grade, she selflessly kept me in the loop regarding testing and scholarships on the road graduation. Ms. Mickens was the best teacher I ever had in highschool (which were challenging times for me as a teenager). She was an amazing literature teacher and I can remember other students never wanting to leave her class when our class period ended. In my junior and senior year, Ms. Mickens taught an educator preparation course (which a few students were selected) and that course definitely shaped my life, to learn from such an excellent educator as Ms. Mickens. I later graduated college with my degree in Early Childhood education and became an educator ( I have Ms. Mickens to thank for all of this). When I had my daughter in 2020, Ms. Mickens supported me through my pregnancy and continues to help me as a first time mom. That is the one thing I love about her, Ms. Mickens cares about everything and everyone in her life and that is one important lesson that she exudes and practices daily. I feel blessed to have met Ms. Mickens and have her in my life.

She never tires from attending and supporting everyone's children including my own whether it be a birthday party or a graduation, even in times of loss and despair, Erica is always there. I have known Ms. Mickens a great bulk of my life. I’ll never forget walking by her classroom and recognizing her as a beautiful spirit. She is truly a joy to be around. She is what I call an “Earthly Angel.” When you are in orbit with her you will never forget the precious moments that turn to lasting memories as I’m sure everyone has come to experience and love. I watched her step into the field of education with a passion for the well being of her students, colleagues or in my case the kid of one of her colleagues. Erica is a LifeChanger in her profession and outside of it. I have had the honor of knowing this individual for 30+years and she hasn't wavered. She has volunteered and supported the various communities I have been involved in from Phoenix, Arizona to Chesapeake, VA while residing in Georgia. Location doesn't matter, nor does the time, as she is always available and finds a way to support no matter the need. Erica is the most deserving person to receive this award.

She challenges students to reach for the sky in their efforts to become productive citizens in a world that is full of opportunity!! As the late Benjamin E. I do not have to read the comments here to know that I will echo the sentiments of Erica’s character, tenacity, friendship and overall divined spirit. Though 20 years have passed since I have had the pleasure of being taught by Ms. Mickens, there is not a day that has passed by since leaving her class where I am not thankful that I was one of the many blessed enough to have her as a teacher, a mentor and is now proud to be her friend. “Thankful” is not sufficient enough for the impact one feels after encountering the formidable Erica Mickens!
Ms. Erica Mickens is a LifeChanger because she helps with making people feel better and encourages you when need be. She encourage me to sign up for a poetry contest, when I didn't really consider myself as such. It turns out I'm very much so a writer and a poet. I never really let people listen to my writings but I was having a bad week and a very bad day so, when I met Ms. Erica I was told I need to open up which I did. She told me I needed to be published, I laughed at her but she was serious. After I signed up to be in the poetry contest I didn't know how to feel. After my performance, I was told some Laughed at me and some cried because of my poem. Either way I won 1st place. If Ms. Mickenss would've never sent me that email I would've never signed up and to be honest I didn't see her email, she had to stop me from coming back from a fire drill. She is so loving and helpful and she always pushes you to be the best and to never give up. She always has a smile on her face which helps a lot of people without knowing.
Ms.Mickens should get the "LifeChanger of the year" award because not only has she changed my life but I've see her change others lives around her for the better. Ms.Mickens has been there for me when I thought nobody was there for me and I thank god that I met her. Ms.Mickens is truly a blessing. She encourages and uplifts everyone one around her. Her calls, messages, just because gestures, prayers, homemade meals, dependability, unwavering support and unconditional love has changed and saved our lives over the years.
In addition to Ms. Mickens being an amazing mother and sister, she is also an excellent counselor. As a former teacher and counselor for many years, I have watched and heard countless stories of her interacting and supporting students, providing educational skills, life skills, and advising and helping them navigate through the challenges and obstacles of life (self-esteem, anxiety, depression, grief, and suicide). During her tenure as a teacher, she developed her own mentoring program that has transcended into her counseling career. Ms. Mickens is the type of individual that can meet a student once and if she makes a connection or receives an inkling in her spirit of sadness and depression, she takes them on and becomes their lifetime mentor and friend. She sees and wants the best for her students and mentees; therefore, she will go above and beyond to inspire and motivate them. She has acquired so many mentees over the years. She has made a conscious effort to provide support, maintain communication, attend pivotal events, and sustain these relationships over the years. Ms. Mickens has impacted, transformed, and saved the lives of many of her students.
Furthermore, Ms. Mickens’ counseling efforts extend beyond the classroom, counseling office and transcends into her personal life. She is an amazing friend and humanitarian; one of the best people that I know. She has a lot of friends and is loved by so many people. She has a heart of gold and she is a giver. Ms. Mickens gives her heart, time, and support to all of her friends and sometimes even perfect strangers. She will give someone the shirt off her back. She loves people and has a passion for helping people. I have witnessed her console her friends for hours on the telephone, drive hours to support friends’ events, deliver random acts of kindness, basically doing whatever she can to uplift and make someone’s day. Most people that have been blessed with the opportunity to have her in their lives share the same sentiment: Ms. Mickens is an amazing friend, most dependable and loyal supporter, listening ear, helping hand, prayer warrior, problem solver, LIFE SAVER, angel and a blessing from heaven right here on Earth.

Nine years ago, my family experienced a devastating loss when my beloved daughter passed away. It was a time of immense sorrow, and it seemed as though darkness had enveloped our lives. In the midst of our grief, Miss Mickens emerged as a beacon of light and hope. she had been to a close friend of my daughter during her lifetime, and she continue to be a source of comfort and support even after her passing.
What sets Miss Mickens apart is her consistent, selfless and genuine care for my daughters two children who were left orphaned with the loss of both their parents. While many friends and acquaintances gradually moved on with their lives, Mickens stood by our side, offering her unwavering support. She stepped in to a role that no one else could fill, becoming a surrogate parent to my grandchildren.

The definition of LifeChanger has Ms. Mickens's name written. My counselor is the best out of the best. The first day we met, it was an instant connection. We talked for hours and it felt like I had known her for years. The Lord honestly stepped in and made things work. I prayed for this moment. Every county I have been to not a soul has made me feel comfortable like she has. All the other counselors couldn't compare to her. She is loving and compassionate like no other. I met Ms.Mickens my senior year of high school. I was a student aid, so every time I was on an errand, she would greet me and thank me for my work. She really made me feel appreciated. What I remember most about her is how she would be so excited about me graduating and going off to college. I would stop and talk to her about it, and she would give me really good life and school advice. At the time, I was debating on staying at home for school or going on campus, and she made me feel comfortable enough to make the decision to stay home. This proved to be the best choice for me, I love my school. I am so thankful to still be in contact with Ms.Mickens. She always checks on me and sees how my life is going. She truly is extraordinary, and I’m proud to be known by her.
