Music that Describes Stephen
Stephen Blanco was nominated by a colleague, Nancy Paredes.
In 2018, Mr. Blanco was hired from Detroit, Michigan, to teach band at Las Vegas High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. Upon his arrival, he was surprised with a request to pilot a mariachi program at Las Vegas High School and its franchise middle school. These two at-risk schools are located in East Las Vegas and serve predominantly Hispanic populations. While these students had traditional opportunities to express themselves musically, establishing a mariachi program would allow them to engage in a meaningful educational experience honoring their culture and community. Mr. Blanco met the challenge head-on, and over the past five years, he has managed to build the LVHS Mariachi program into an internationally recognized performance group by holding his students to high standards. Mr. Blanco devotes himself to his students, establishing positive relationships with them and their families and supporting them to reach excellence. Mr. Blanco also ensures his students perform well in their content-area classes, and Mariachi Joya boasts a 100% graduation rate each year it has been in existence.
During the pandemic, as schools transitioned to virtual learning platforms, Mr. Blanco saw a need to bring his students out of their grief and isolation and give them a reason to get up in the morning. He spent much time fundraising to secure recording equipment and even taught himself how to record and produce a record. He delivered a microphone to every student's house so they could submit individual recordings for an album, "Joya" (available on Apple Music and Spotify.) The buzz created by this album caught the attention of The Biden Inaugural Committee, which invited Mariachi Joya to represent the State of Nevada in the 2021 Presidential Inauguration Virtual Parade. This virtual compilation highlighted the smiling faces of students recording their segment of the song in front of closets, stuffed animals, and crowded learning spaces, but anyone watching could only smile! "Our Mariachi students are now asked to perform at events all over Las Vegas and the western United States, and they always represent well, both as musicians and citizens," said Paredes.
Mr. Blanco does not limit his time, effort, and expertise to his own mariachi program. He also serves as a mentor and support system to his colleagues on and off campus. Mr. Blanco continually offers assistance to support the entire Performing Arts Department at Las Vegas High School by helping set up sound and lights or simply sitting in the audience to provide moral support. At one point, Mr. Blanco jumped in to direct the opening night of the spring musical when the theater teacher had a death in the family. Mr. Blanco's leadership extends off campus as he provides support of all types to mariachi teachers across the District and even hosts the Clark County School District's annual Mariachi festival. He has recently begun promoting the implementation of mariachi programs at schools locally and in other parts of the country.
Mr. Blanco's professionalism and the success of his student groups have earned him and their many accolades. His student groups have earned Superior ratings in all local festival competitions, and Mariachi Joya was named the "Nation's Premier Mariachi Ensemble" by School Band and Orchestra Magazine (Feb. 2022). The group has performed for then Presidential Candidate Joe Biden, President Barack Obama, Vice President Kamala Harris, and the local senator. Mr. Blanco was a Heart of Education Winner and has received a Grammy nomination for his work as an educator. Despite all of this, he remains humble. When given the opportunity to speak, Mr. Blanco always turns the spotlight back to his students, their families, and the hard work and commitment they have contributed to the group's success. He has changed students' lives by inspiring a level of confidence in his students as they can share their pride and passion for mariachi music and their Hispanic heritage.
Mr. Blanco has done an exceptional job with the Las Vegas High school Mariachi program. For not growing up with a Mariachi foundation, Mr. Blanco has superseded the expectations of many. He’s built this program from the ground up. From bringing in professional mariachi instructors to assist in the fine tuning of mariachi style, to giving students an opportunity to participate in mariachi workshops and competitions throughout the states. He influences his students to be the best and the 100% graduation success rate is to no surprise. As a mariachi educator, I will continue supporting Mr. Blanco for his continued success.
I've seen my grandson grow in to a amazing band teacher,he loves his students and work very hard helping them turn in to wonderful mariachi players they have played for the president twice now
Mr. Blanco has made such a positive impact to all his students including my niece. They go to school wanting to learn more everyday and with a positive attitude. Not does he help them musically but also academically. He goes all the way beyond what he is expected to.
Mr. Blanco makes a difference in these kids lives. High School years are very tough and they influence a lot in shaping what their future would look like. He needs to keep up the good work on keeping these young kids off the streets.

Stephen Blanco is a once in a lifetime educator. His goal and purpose is not just to get each student to learn and advance on their instrument but to show each student that they have an opportunity in life to see more than just they're community. He gives himself away to the purpose of making sure each student he comes to contact with will leave with a new understanding that Mariachi is and amazing genre of music but it is also considered education. Although i’m not one of Mr. Blancos students at LVHS, he has been a tremendous help to me in the music world and a great mentor. I am a student who attends a magnet CTE school which does not provide music classes. Having friends who attend LVHS and are in the mariachi program has connected me to Mr. Blanco. He has become like a mentor to me and has a very large heart with room for everyone. He is always trying to help others, going out of his way to help with any issues or concerns others have. He is an amazing person and deserves all the credit he gets and more.
Mr. Blanco is hands down, the most incredible and coolest person ever. Their journey to where they are now is nothing short of amazing. From the early days, facing challenges head-on, they’ve turned everything into a success story. The passion and dedication they bring to mariachi music are just awe-inspiring. It’s not just about the music; it’s the way they lead, creating this incredible bond among all of us. Our mariachi experience is something else, thanks to their vision. Every performance is a masterpiece etched in memories. This person journey isn’t just about musical talent; it’s a tale of hard work, perseverance, and a brilliant artistic touch. Mr. Blanco is an amazing teacher/music director! I am a parent of 2 children who are in his programs Mariachi Joya & Cristal. Mr. Blanco has always made me feel at home. Mr. Blanco has always welcomed me into practices, backstage and to every event the school has. The countless hours of teaching and practicing with our children is incredible. Mr. Blanco is an amazing person and teacher. He has a big responsibility and does a very good job at doing what is asked of him and then some. He has become a friend to me and someone I can always count on.
To be clear, this award and any other, should be given to Mr.Blanco. Not only has he helped me in my worst moments as a high school teen, but now as a friend as a young adult navigating through life. Aside from all the lessons and accomplishments we have learned together, he has also helped me in my vocal development that I still use to this day as a singer at my church’s worship team. Mr.Blanco is someone who has not only helped me with my love of music but has also shaped me into the person I am today as well as others. His determination and countless hours of hard work have given his students opportunities many have dreamed of. As his student I am very thankful for the things he has done for me and my friends. His big heart holds space for everyone and anyone which is why he is truly appreciated.
Mr. Blanco has always been a father figure to me since the day I met him. He is very encouraging, pushing everyone to do the best they can, even if it’s hard. Mr. Blanco has taught me perseverance, and even his stubbornness rubbed off on me! Now I refuse to give up so easily on a challenge, something I wasn’t able to do before. Blanco is a person of gratitude, he believes that gratitude can change a persons life , and his teaching has taught me exactly that. He has changed my life for the better and filled my world with many opportunities that not everyone can say they get. And for that I am extremely grateful to him for. Mr Blanco is a wonderful and humble person, he never hesitates to give words of encouragement, despite having gone through so much in his own life. He’s watched me grow for six years, and in a way, I’ve watched him grow as well. Throughout those six years, I’ve seen him try to improve himself as a person, and he’s never lost his gratitude and passion for music. Mr. Blanco sees his students as family, and always reminds us how much he loves us. And I know that he knows that we love him just as much!!
Mr.Blanco has impacted many lives at LVHS. Although I am not one of his personal students, I have seen how he changes the lives of many from a different standpoint. I first met Mr. Blanco my freshman year as he was the Student Council Freshman Class advisor. Through the rough times of Covid - 19 and online school, he was able to bring our freshman class to build the connection we have today. Mr. Blanco has done so much for out Student Council at LVHS, there are not enough words in a dictionary that can describe how thankful we are for him. He has taught us countless important life lessons every encounter we have with him, from lessons like "speaking up for ourselves and how our voice matters" to "how to work a sound system for our Student Council Assemblies", he has never turned us away when we have asked for his help. Beginning our Senior year, Mr. Blanco returned as our Senior Class Advisor, and has helped the senior class countless times this year. We cannot express how much time Mr. Blanco has sacrificed to simply be there for us and support us in every way.
Blanco is not the principal yet parents go to him with concerns about their children's school. Blanco is not the student council advisor yet we are always in his office asking for favors. Blanco is not a celebrity promoter yet Mariachi Joya has performed everywhere from President Biden's Inauguration to the halftime show at Allegiant Stadium. Blanco is not Santa Clause yet he personally Mae sure every one of his students had a gift to open on Christmas. Blanco is not a parent, yet we all know we can come to him for moral support, guidance, and love. Blanco is Blanco. Blanco is all of these things and much more. Blanco is a life changer.
Mr. Blanco has changed my life in many ways and I’m very grateful for what he’s done. He has given me many opportunity’s not just musically but educationally as well. He helps me with music and questions I might have same with others in his program. Mr blanco makes me feel valued as a person same with his students and colleagues. From a young age, Stephen showed genuine compassion to those around him and drive to excel in whatever he put his mind to. He continues to show that each day as he puts 110% into his work and each of his student’s lives.
I am continually amazed on what he has accomplished and will accomplish.
I have known Stephen his entire life. Even at a young age, he took his role of being a big brother seriously. He looked after his younger brother with love, care, and guidance. When Stephen was a young child, his aging grandfather moved into their home, not being able to live on his own any longer. Stephen's father and mother helped to ensure that his grandfather was well taken care of. He was raised to look out for those who are less fortunate, to appreciate the blessings and gifts that have been bestowed upon him, and that he has a moral obligation to help his family and the community around him.
I am not the least bit surprised to see that Stephen is using his God-given musical gifts, loving patience, and leadership talents to inspire, encourage, teach, and lead the youth of Las Vegas. There is no doubt that the love that Stephen has poured and will continue to pour into his students will have an impact that will positively affect the lives of his students, their families, and their future generations. He teaches his students to rise to their best. He deeply believes in his students and teaches them not just music, but that each and every one of them are incredibly capable, talented, intelligent, and precious. He reminds them that they have the power to make a lasting impact on the world around them, both now and in the future.
We miss him so much in Michigan but know that he is doing important work changing lives in Las Vegas.
I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Blanco, and I can say without a doubt that he has improved my sister's life in a significant way. He is a father to her, and he is someone who genuinely cares about people - something my sister really appreciates. I am looking forward to getting to know him better, just like my sister has. I also want to learn as much about Mr. Blanco as possible so that when I go to high school, I can look up to him with admiration!

It’s clear to anyone to see the passion Stephen puts into his work. From when I first met him in seventh grade band, I knew he had a talent for the music arts. I’ve been honored beyond belief to watch Stephen throughout his career, from discovering his love of music in middle school to becoming drum major in high school to pursuing it as his degree at college all the way to Las Vegas High School. It’s incredible to see what he’s accomplished in his professional career in just a few years. Somehow, some way, I’m no longer surprised when he tells me he’s performing for the president of the United States or a congressman or that he’s been nominated for a Grammy or been given the key to the city of Las Vegas - it’s just become the level of excellence Stephen has established for himself. These accolades are reminders that ultimately reiterate that Stephen is changing lives - his students, his community, and everyone around him. Mr. Blanco will always be a person who you can go to and be yourself. He has been there for me since the day I’ve met him. The way he advocates and puts not only himself, but his kids out there and promotes is amazing. Anytime you need Mr. Blanco, he’s there. No matter how busy, stressed, tired, or exhausted he is, he will always make sure he puts his kids needs first and he’s shown that on multiple accounts. He has presented himself and his program with such grace and passion I’ve never seen anyone else do to like he does. There will be a point and time where I’m no longer to be taught by him, but I make sure to take his teachers to heart and always keep them with me. He has built two mariachi programs from the ground up and I know one day he will do it again soon. He’s been a real inspiration to me. He’s taught me how to advocate for myself, be confident in myself, and to not let anyone talk down to me. That’s how Mr. Blanco has changed my life.
Having Mr.Blanco as a teacher has really helped me during school because he is very motivated and enthusiastic about his job and his profession, as he supports me and all of his other students in any way he can no matter what, Mr Blanco is also very understanding and forgiving when it comes to his students because if you are going through a hard and difficult time in your life to the point where you need to take a break during class Mr Blanco does not mind at all and in fact, he would even go with you to talk with you about everything that may be going on in your life, which is what makes Mr Blanco such a great teacher.
Mr. Blanco has made a big impact in my life over the past year. His Mariachi program has helped me change my life course and has helped me better my health, gain new experiences, find a meet new people, and how to appreciate the little things that happen. He has helped me find the better version of myself, and I can proudly say now that I love who I am with the help of him. He has helped me find my value as a person, and has helped me overcome some of my challenges. What once used to be a barely passing student, is now a straight A’s and set for college. I have been so grateful for all these experiences hes given me and hes been there for me through some of my darkest moments and has helped me throughout them. Hes more than just a teacher and is someone I feel like I can depend on when stuff is getting tough. Mr. Blanco has helped start up a program at Harney, and without that program, I wouldnt have been in his group now today without it. Im forever thankful for Mr. Blanco and will forever be grateful for him.
In the short time of knowing Mr.Blanco I can easily say that he cares and loves for the students. From my perspective he isn't just a teacher, he is a leader, a mentor, and a man who changes lives. Mr.Blanco is very passionate not only about his job but to take care of you as well, for example there was a time where me and some of my classmates needed help with assignments, he helped us and was very patient with letting us do work in his own classroom. It hasn’t been long since my daughter has been with Mr. Blanco but in such little time I can see the difference that he has made. She also goes to school wanting to improve especially musically. He treats his student as if there were his own. He goes above and beyond everyday to help these students be successful. He makes them feel comfortable and makes them feel like they can talk to them no matter what. He makes them feel like if there were home with family and I’m glad students have someone like him to look up to.

Mr. Blanco has been such a great aspect of my life, helping me overcome struggles and motivating me to do my best in everything I do. Without him, I would have never been able to become who I am, never would’ve accomplished everything I have, and never would have learned to love and be loved. Mr. Blanco continues to change my life through music, making me become more successful than I would have ever imagined.
Mr.Blanco has change my life because at the meantime i was getting bad grades and don’t know what to do for my future. So when he open a mariachi class i was interested because i love music. So when he made a group for mariachi to play at concerts and performances i wanna to be in it but for that i need Good grades so i really study hard just to be in it and so i made it in. I’ve played the guitar for 6 years and being a good student of good grades, Mr.Blanco has been always there for me when i need help, he really changed my life.
Mr. Blanco has changed my life in so many ways I always make sure he knows. From the day I walked into his classroom I immediately felt at home. He shows his love to us in many different ways. He’s taught me how to be the best version of myself and he constantly pushes me to do and be better every day. I truly believe Mr. Blanco deserves the world and more. He has always and continues to be the best supporter of his kids that he teaches. He built two programs from the ground up and they are both thriving. The way he has mentored me and taught me many lessons continues to lead me to believe that he truly does care. There is not one passing day where he doesn’t not show his love for his kids. He is always clawing his way for not only his Joya students, but all his kids in his program to succeed. He doesn’t talk about what he has to go through to give us the absolute best, but we know he’s gone though it all to give it to us and I appreciate him for that.
Mr. Blanco had made such a difference in my life just in the little time I’ve known but sometimes it feels like I’ve known him forever. I always feel like I can be myself around him and I can open up to him. All these things help have the confidence to succeed. He has always seen something special in me even when I can’t see it in myself. He believes in me and what I do. Not only has he helped me musically but also to become a better person to others. He truly changing people life’s for the better and I know he will continue to do the same.

From the moment I stepped into his music class, I could feel the energy and enthusiasm radiating from him.
