Music that Describes Heather

Heather Martin was nominated by her daughter, Victoria Mastin.

"I am nominating my mother," said Mastin. "I go to the school she teaches at, and I have heard my friends and peers boast about how amazing of a teacher she is. I am so excited to have her in class next year. I have seen all her work and dedication put into her job. She skips countless dinners, occasionally staying at school until 8 PM to create new, engaging curriculum for her students. I have witnessed her save students' lives. Before the first period, a student eating breakfast in her room began choking, and she followed all the steps and performed the Heimlich maneuver, saving the student's life. She had epilepsy sensitivity lights installed in her classroom for her students prone to seizures. I watched her start timers and grab pillows for one of her drama students having a seizure in her classroom. I watched her save a kid from suicide. She is truly the best role model I can ask for, and I think she deserves this award most."

Heather is greatly deserving of the life changer of the year award. I have had the pleasure of watching her passion make a difference in so many peoples lives. From those that just need an encouraging word to partnering with kids and supporting them until they fulfill their goals. She has even taken them in our home. She is amazing and gifted at her career to connect with youth on a different level. This ability allows her to build a partnership that will impact both their lives forever! I am extremely proud of how I get to witness 1 person make a difference in so many peoples lives. As stated in her write up.. sometimes she flat saves lives… All in a days work. Heather has impacted so many lives over the years she is absolutely deserving of the life changer of the year award!

In a profession full of budget cuts and legislative interference that makes it hard to be an effective educator, Heather continues to rise to the top. I met her when we served on our schools Sight Based Decision Making committee, a parent/teacher group working together to make Kentucky schools the best they can be for ALL Kentucky kids. Heather is the poster child for this. Her students are always her first priority. My personal experiences are solely Drama Club related. Extra curricular activities are often unpaid roles for teachers. Heather makes sure the Drama Club is a welcoming space for any and all students. She offers guidance and advice without judgement. She makes it a safe space where our kids learn to respect themselves and the arts. Teaching is more than just reading a lesson from a book, it’s being there day in and day out. If you ask any student about Heather Mastian, you will hear more about the life lessons she taught them than any “book” lesson. You will hear about how she made them better citizens. You will hear about how she changed their lives just by listening. You really can’t ask for much more than that.

Heather always seems proud of me, at times for what seems like merely existing. She can connect with anyone, no matter how "cool" or "uncool" they are. She will pull a wallflower to the dance floor and will listen to you long after the group has lost interest. She is a mother to the whole community of kids and we all love her.

Heather Mastin is one of those amazing teachers you get once during your school years. All 3 of my children were privileged to be her students. She is such a positive and upbeat person who exudes kindness. She loves what she teaches, and she cares about her students. She makes them feel good about themselves and she makes learning fun. My youngest daughter struggled with reading comprehension and hated to read. She is now 23 and enjoys reading books for fun because of what she learned in Mrs. Mastin's class. This is definitely a deserved nomination.

Heather Mastin is amazing. I am lucky to have been able to call her a colleague and friend for many years. Like Tori said, students rave about having Ms. Mastin as a teacher. They are disappointed if they aren't in her class. My own children and two nieces claim her as their all time favorite teacher. When we see her out she gives them hugs, checks on their life status and makes sure they know she is proud of them. Wow. I can't say enough wonderful things about Ms. Mastin and neither can her students.
