Shlena Freeman was nominated by Sherry Stinson, a family member.

Ms. Freeman was affected by Hurricane Harvey and lost everything in her apartment. She had to be rescued and taken to a shelter with only her two sweet dogs. In total, she lost her home, her contents and her car.

"It was terrible, but through that, she shined more than she has ever shined before," Stinson said. "She was more worried about her students and her school than herself. She reached out to make sure that all of her students were safe and did whatever she could to help out."

"This young lady is a remarkable person who has a remarkable heart, and I am so glad and honored to call her my family," Stinson said. "She was humbled to watch her very first class graduate this school year. Students remarked that their education became important to them because of Ms. Freeman."

Shlena has always made my life better. She has a sweet and caring spirit. She has always put her student's well being first in all that she does. Shlena has never let anything stop her. She has not had an easy life, but anyone that knows her would not really know that. When she was displaced, by hurricane Harvey, she worried about everyone else.

Through out all of the difficulty Shlena had such a great attitude. She was more worried about her students and others than she was herself.
