Andrew Tapia was nominated by his colleague, Diana Chhuo.
Mr. Tapia is a leadership teacher and after school teacher. He also trains with students for the Marathon for Students Run LA. He has dedicated over 10 years to his students and brings a high level of leadership and enthusiasm to his school community.
"His life revolves around the love he has for our school and the students," Chhuo said. "We joke around and call him Mr. Hollenbeck because he does everything for our school."
On his days off, Mr. Tapia takes students on hiking trips and makes sure that they are able to afford special trips when funding is low.
"We can't thank him enough for his level of commitment to everything he does," Chhuo said. "The students are blessed to have such a positive role model that goes above and beyond for them. He is teaching them leadership and positive character traits that they will have to use later in life."
For the past 12 years, I have been blessed to know Andrew Tapia, and have collaborated with him in Hollenbeck MS. Andrew is hard-working, passionate and a dedicated youth advocate. He spends countless hours supporting youth- whether it’s through a trip to Catalina or running their first marathon or mentoring them through student leadership. The students and school staff all know that if Andrew is behind a particular event or project, it will be detail-oriented, thoughtful and successful because he puts his heart into it. I once asked him why he does all that he does. He remembers not having much adult support or youth spaces growing up so he vows to change that for our current Boyle Heights youth. For our youth- and for me, personally- Andrew is a life changer!
I joined srla that was 2 years ago ,and yet he still tells me "how are you".One of the best and I support him.
I have know Andrew for the past 5 years and I can definitely say that he is one of the most committed individuals willing to go above and beyond for his students. He enjoys working with the community and gives a lot of his time and dedication to the families he works with. Andrew is constantly advocating for his students and making a difference. He continues to encourage students to pursue their careers and finish school. He is an extraordinary person and is a LifeChanger!
Andrew is my cousin and I also work for the Los Angeles Unified School District. He is a remarkable individual that dedicates himself and his weekends for his students. I even offered him to work at my school when he was unsure if the school he is at will budget for his position. Of course he declined offer as he was dedicated to Hollenbeck Middle School. He ran the leadership class and with his creativity he created an amazing yearbooks for the years he took over. He is the leader for Students Run LA (SRLA) and now adding Hiking Club to his plate of already amazing things he does for students and community of Boyle Heights. Andrew is well respected by many peers and students. The students look up to him as an Uncle. The students learn leadership skills, some students never leave outside of Boyle Heights, and explore other adventures. I am so proud of him and know that my Aunt Gloria (his Mother) is looking down from Heaven knowing she did an amazing job raising a great man. He is well deserved of many honors. I know he will make you proud to carry this Honor with such PRIDE.
Mr. Andrew Tapia is a life educator that teaches our youth about commitment and perseverance. He exposes our youth to experiences outside of their community. His investment of time and energy is admirable. He is without a doubt a role model for many.

He is passionate and it shows in the quality of work who he puts out there. I wish him the best and glad others saw how wonderful he is as well!!!
Mr. Tapia is devoted to the well-being of all students. His commitment to the students extends beyond the school day. Mr. Tapia is aware that in order for students to be successful in academics, they need more than tutoring or other academic activities. He gives them a purpose to be an active participant in their learning, health, character, and community. I would hope that Mr. Tapia is recognized for all that he does.
Andy is extremely passionate about making positive impacts on each of his students lives. He deserves this wonderful recognition.
