Joyce Rodriguez was nominated by Thomas Ledbetter, a member of her community.

Ms. Rodriguez is a fourth grade teacher at West Gate Elementary School. One day, she was working in the cafeteria while doing lunchtime supervision, when a young student started choking on a grape. Thinking quickly, Ms. Rodriguez provided CPR on the child and dislodged the grape. She saved the young girl from further distress and helped her regain her breath.

Ms. Rodriguez has used this incident as a learning experience for her class. She stresses the importance of chewing food thoroughly and not playing games while eating. Ms. Rodriguez also has her class recite these rules and why they are important.

"She is a LifeChanger and a Life Saver," Ledbetter said.

Ms. Rodriguez is an amazing teacher. She is patient and loving and the children love and respect her. She also shares valuable information and resources with her colleagues and has a great sense of humor making her a fantastic teacher to work with,

Ms. Rodriguez is an outstanding teacher who is a role model for not only her students, but for all students that cross her path. She deserves this award not only for being the hero of the day, but because she is a hero every single day. She is constantly changing her students' lives for the better, which could ultimately save their lives. She is also a LifeChanger and a LifeSaver for her peers. She is a highly respected colleague who would go above and beyond for her co-workers.
