Howard Savage was nominated by his spouse, Angela Savage.
According to social psychologist, Geert Hofstede, culture is the school’s personality, whereas climate is the school’s attitude. As the principal of Quitman High School, Mr. Savage realized that creating a positive school culture could be the catalyst for change within the school. This was the rationale for three programs/projects initiated to improve student achievement at QHS:
- Panther Nation Campaign
- PBIS Panther Paw Incentive Program, and
- Re-Alignment of Curriculum and Instruction.
The Panther Nation Campaign had three objectives, to build relationships among stakeholders, highlight positive things at QHS, and establish community partnerships. First, to build relationships, Mr. Savage held individual meetings with all 36 teachers and 527 students. According to New Teacher Induction authors Annette Breaux and Harry Wong, teachers remain in their positions when they feel supported by administrators, have bonds with other teachers, and pursue a collective culture of student success.
To accomplish the second objective, Mrs and Mrs. Savage's leadership team implemented a schoolwide marketing plan and asked the broadcasting classes to create videos to generate a buzz around being a part of Panther Nation. These videos were uploaded to the school district’s webpage, social media sites, and the NFHS website. Ultimately, these videos generated buy-in from students, teachers, parents, and community members.
The third objective of building community partnerships was accomplished by scheduling several community events to promote the school’s mission and vision. The most successful community event was called Panther Nation Unite, which had over 800 stakeholders in attendance. During Panther Nation Unite, the school board members served refreshments to stakeholders. Panther Nation Unite was the largest parental involvement event ever held at QHS, and it galvanized the community.
Mr. Savage implemented the PBIS Panther Paw Program schoolwide with the following objectives: to reduce referral rates by 25%, increase attendance, increase academic achievement, improve school culture, and increase time on task. When teachers observed students doing something good, they would receive a panther paw. Furthermore, students may also provide panther paws to effective teachers. Each week, names would be drawn from a raffle of students and teachers who were given a panther paw to receive an incentive. During the 2016-2017 school year, over 500 students and all 36 teachers received a PBIS incentive. During this time, Mr. Savage used his personal finances to fund the program for his stakeholders. Discipline referrals decreased by 25%, student failures decreased by 40%, student attendance was 93%, teacher attendance was 96%, and a hybrid-schedule was implemented.
Mr. Savage knew that his school would have to strategically re-align its curriculum and instruction. Mr. and Mrs. Savage implemented the following initiatives based on the school’s data: placing students into courses based on test scores, eliminating non-rigorous courses, increasing observations by 80%, purchasing a universal screener, providing professional development for staff, increasing dual credit and advanced placement courses, and hiring an instructional facilitator.
"These strategies helped move Quitman High School to a B rated school with 193 total growth points on the Mississippi Accountability Model, and this is why I believe my husband is a LifeChanger for his learning organization," Angela Savage said.

Dr, Savage strives with enthusiasm to provide students with a quality public education each day. He communicates with students, teachers and parents to bring out the best in all stakeholders. Because Dr. Savage prioritizes sound classroom instruction, he influences teachers to prepare professionally to meet students' needs. Dr. Savage is a jewel in that he speaks to up and coming educators and encourages them to earn their credentials and proceed with purpose into the ranks of teaching. Dr. Savage is known throughout the state for his accomplishments as he has been recognized by numerous professional groups and organizations. From the days when he taught United States History students and prepared 100% of them to pass the state test until his current administrator situation, Dr. Savage is a LifeChanger.

I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Howard Savage when he was selected to attend the Mississippi School Boards Association Prospective Superintendent Leadership Academy (PSLA), a yearlong program that prepares administrators for the challenging role of superintendent. As the facilitator of the program, part of my role is informally evaluating the participants.
Dr. Savage is unassumingly impressive. During the PSLA, he was always the first student in class, arriving at least an hour early for each meeting. He was humble, positive, and eager to learn. He contributed to discussions, shared best practices with his colleagues, gleaned from their experiences, and displayed noticeable soft skills and a strong work ethic.
After observing Dr. Savage in class, having conversations with him, reviewing data for his school, and reading articles about him; I asked a superintendent who knew him well, “Is Howard Savage the real deal?” To which he replied, “He IS the real deal! He knows curriculum, school climate, and how to move a school forward. I tried to get him in my district, but he had already committed to Quitman.” The superintendent confirmed just what I thought – that Dr. Savage’s laser-focus on student success is evidenced by the achievements Quitman High School is experiencing under his leadership.
I believe this LifeChanger will become an outstanding superintendent one day. I am excited for the children in Mississippi who will be blessed by the leadership of Dr. Howard Savage!
I've seen hundreds of principals over the years, but there is only one Howard Savage. The enthusiasm for education he shows is unparalleled. Mr. Savage is able to connect with his students and bring them with him on his quest for student achievement. Some students may get into trouble and have to be disciplined, but Mr. Savage navigates those situations in such a meaningful way that they come through that experience with a respect for themselves and him. It's rare to see an educator who is able to reach so many students in such a meaningful way across such broad behavioral and demographic categories. His energy and positivity are infectious and they affect the entire school climate, lifting spirits, increasing focus and impacting student outcomes.
Dr Savage is a phenomenal leader. He goes above and beyond to support his family, school, community, and aspiring 21st century leaders. He strives to reach those in need and inspires everyone he meets. Dr. Savage is an amazing person and I am honored to have been apart of his leadership course. I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Savage this past summer. He is a fabulous teacher and leader in his home, school and community. Since meeting and getting to know Dr. Howard Savage, I have witnessed first hand this true example of a LifeChanger. The fact that he has made a tremendous impact at Quitman High School places him in the high ranks of life changers because he does touch students daily and as he does so he is changing the lives of, not just one or two, but many. On a visit to his school in the fall I was greeted by two student school leaders who had been touched by Dr. Savages training. They were phenomenal and gave credit to their principal for their achievements as well as those of the school body as a whole.
I have also been privileged to serve with Dr. Savage on some important committees. One of those is the MDE State Testing Taskforce in which his voice as an administrator has given credit to the educator voice which is so needed on this taskforce. Dr. Savage also serves on one of Mississippi Association of Educators' most important committees, the MAE Professional Development Advisory Committee. Again, his input has been invaluable to the teaching profession.
I would like to also add that Dr. Savage was honored at the Mississippi Association of Educators 1st Annual Excellence in Education Awards Gala last March as our Administrator of the Year.
I am proud to know Dr. Savage and believe he is indeed a LifeChanger. His enthusiasm is contagious and his love for young people and the education of those young people is evident in everything he does. I first met Dr. Savage when he enrolled as a student in the Educational Leadership program at William Carey University. It was apparent from the assignments that he submitted that he was committed to his profession and that he always considered the best interests of students when making decisions. Dr. Howard Savage is someone who spends unconditional time and service toward establishing a better future for all who enter into the walls of Quitman High School and who he encounter. He has redirected the vision of our nation through words of change, encouragement, and inspiration. He has been the voice of change for students, staff, administration, community leaders and family. Making a change in life of others is the ministry that God has given Dr. Savage. There is something about Dr. Savage that brings out the best in others to accept the challenge. Dr. Savage is a great motivation to other administrators. He spoke to my leadership class recently to promote positive interactions within the school. He is a very positive and motivating person. He is an excellent administrative mentor.
I have had the privilege of serving on the Mississippi Department of Education Accountability Taskforce ,Testing Taskforce, and Grow Your Own Teacher committee with Dr. Savage. We met last year when he was named Administrator of the Year for Mississippi and I was named Teacher of the Year. I have visited his school on my tour and can honestly say that he IS a Life Changer for those that he comes into contact with. He is real, down to earth, and understands what it takes to make a difference in a child's life.

Dr. Savage is truly a Life Changer with the work he does as a Principal and as an ambassador in public education. Mr. Savage, is a great Principal! When I was in the 8th Grade, I heard lots of good things about him, from some of the High School kids I already knew. Since I am in the 9th Grade now, I really see his potential. He wants the best for students, and he wants every student to bring out their academic potential. As a former principal and school superintendent, I know the challenge and the potential impact of being a school principal. The first thing that jumps out is that he really knows his students by name and they are comfortable coming to him for guidance. Dr. Savage also donates his time speaking to other educators around the state sharing his vision for public education. I first met Howard Savage as a student in my class at William Carey University in 2010 when he was working on his master’s degree in Educational Leadership that led to a principal’s license. From the beginning of the first class, I knew there was something special about Howard Savage. His attitude about class, other students and life in general was outstanding. Howard was at the top of the class in performance. He worked well with other students and often offered assistance with assignments. One of the things that Howard shared with the class was about an incentive to improve discipline at the Alternative School where he worked. At this school, students were given tokens when they were caught behaving appropriately and then were allowed to buy items from a school store. Howard wanted to put items in the store that students would work hard to purchase. He would take his Saturday’s and go to thrift stores purchasing Polo shirts to place in the store. These Polo shirts were a hot item it the store. Howard was making a difference with these alternative school students, where many teachers would have accepted the behavior as the norm. He went the extra mile to make a difference. This is how Howard Savage works. Always striving to make the world a better place.
Dr. Savage was a great encouragement to me this summer as I started my graduate work. He personally encouraged me to pursue leadership when I was really doubting my abilities. He took time out to speak to me individually and I cannot thank him enough for helping me. He really is a life changer.

Dr. Howard Savage is the absolute and true definition of a "Life Changer". How do I know this? I know this because I have witnessed it, benefited from it, and been amazed by it. I have spent my entire twenty-eight year teaching career here in the Quitman School District. I love this school district, and the children who dwell here. When the principle position came open at QHS for the 2016-2017 school year, I prayed that QHS would be blessed with someone who also loved "our kids" and who would take QHS to a level of success it had never been before. Well, what can I say two years later? God is good, and prayers are definitely answered.
Dr. Savage stepped into this school and turned it upside down in good way. He explained that he expected excellence from the teachers and the students, and he would not accept any excuses for less than that. When he explained his goals and his proposals to reach those goals, there was doubt from teachers and from students. When he said that he knew we could accomplish greatness, many said he was a dreamer. In the beginning, he believed in us more than we believed in ourselves. Now in his third year as principle, teachers know and students know that we can accomplish greatness with hard work. That is one of the main reasons why I know that Dr. Savage is a true "LIFE CHANGER". He not only inspired teachers to believe, but he inspired students to believe.
If you ask students here at QHS, they will tell you things like, Dr. Savage cares about me, Dr. Savage is proud of me, and Dr. Savage knows that I can do it. They say these things, because they are true. He is personally involved. The kids know it and respect it, and they love him for it. If you ask faculty here, they will tell you too. Dr. Savage always greets us with a smile and encouraging words, and his door is always open if we have a problem.
Dr. Savage gave QHS a new name. "PANTHER NATION" I am so proud and blessed to be a part of "Panther Nation", and I know for sure we have a "Life Changer" that dwells within these walls. I hope you know it too! Please choose Dr. Howard Savage as the Life Changer of the Year.
Mr. Savage is an extremely nice, caring, lovable principle. He lets us have fun when the time is right but when it comes to education time he all down to business. No matter the situation Mr. savage will get us out of it so i thank him for that. Mr. savage is a dedicated person who gets his job done and he does it right.

When there is a problem going on, he is the first one on the problem and takes care of it. I am proud to put my support behind Dr. Savage for this award. I am a parent of three 2018 graduates from Quitman High School. When my children initially enrolled at QHS, I had reservations about the entire district. So I became a substitute to keep an eye on my children, I quickly realized that Dr. Savage was so motivational to these children and staff, I stayed to continue substituting after my children graduated. Dr. Savage recognizes that each child wants someone to know they exist, that they are important whether the grade is an A or F. They want to know that their principal is not just an authority figure, but a leader that is inspiring and understanding to the challenges of their generation. Two of my children received dual credits that have propelled them further then most freshman their first year at Mississippi State University and I am proud to say that one of my sons, through all of his hardships in high school will be graduating this December from Jones College. I thank Dr. Savage for raising the level of expectations for these children and motivating them to pursue dreams and give them opportunities they never thought possible. In my 79 years of living on this earth, I've never seen Quitman High School so impressive. I can remember when it was Zach Huggins High School (the school for white kids before desegregation) and I can't help but smile at how it is an African American man leading the school to new heights. For two, he has really made the school rankings go up, so you know he's doing something good. We used to be a D ranked school, but he changed us and brought us all the way to a B. I have never seen an educator as enthusiastic about their job as Dr. Savage. This man RADIATES love. Although my children haven’t made it to the high school yet, I have had the chance to see him at pep rallies and football games encouraging his students. He encourages my daughter and her fellow QLE Kittens every Friday night they take the football field to cheer and dance. I’ve watched this man turn the high school from a failing school to a succeeding one. He has made his students see the talent within them. He is truly amazing.

Dr. Savage has a great track record of showing his commitment to the people he comes in contact with. He displays a level of dedication that is key in an individual who is truly committed to changing lives.
In my opinion as an educator, Dr.Howard Savage Jr. first of all, is a profound individual that actually love people. From a child, Dr. Savage displayed public relation skills, that propelled his social standings in the local community. As a student, Dr. Savage was a model student in the classroom and on campus. One of Mr. Savage's supreme attributes that I am proud of, is his honest relationship with the truth. Dr. Savage has always been a hard and prolific worker, from his youth as well as into his adulthood. I speak from an empirical position when I comment about Dr. Savage. I have seen Dr. Savage work his way up through the ranks of education, starting at the lower level and the most difficult level of education and produce some outstanding students. I recall one of his students mentioning that Mr. Savage, who was not a Dr. at that particular time say, Mr. Savage will do everything within his power to help his students, but Mr. Savage don't play, he is for real. This young man kept his nose to the grinding stone and without any envy toward anyone worked in the position that was allotted to him with compassion. With hard and prolific work, Dr. Savage was recognized by leadership and appointed to higher positions. Dr. Savage never complained about his position, regardless of that position. I have witnessed Dr. Savage as an assistant principle communicate with his students on a personal level and the respected and admired him and he respected his students with compassion, as well as concern for their future. Dr. Savage was offered a position as principle and he has excelled in that position as well, taking a D-level school and transcending it to a B-level school. Dr. Savage is not just a great educator, but he is a great father, husband, and son. If this award, in my opinion be awarded to anyone, it should be awarded to Dr. Savage, because in my opinion, there is no one more deserving that Dr. Savage. Dr. Savage has committed his entire life endeavoring to improve the lives of his students and individuals around him. I am proud to say that I know that Dr. Savage is a life changer because he changed my life for the better over forty two years ago, and I am proud to say that I know him as a friend, son, and most of all as a father. I have been inspired by Dr. Savage on many occasions and he continues to inspire me in a positive way.

This man is a wonderful principal, man, and best of all, friend. He is the only principal I have ever worked for that students go out of their way to speak to or just give a high five. When I interviewed a year ago for a job, I interviewed for an English position. As soon as he found out that I was licensed in Theatre, he started moving mountains to get something started that the students had asked for. See, I had no idea that QHS students wanted theatre. It had been over 10 years since they even offered a theatre class. Dr. Savage needed an English teacher but he also knew what the students wanted. He was able to get it approved and created a class that students had begged for. My first year was amazing because of him believing in me. At the end of the year, he approached me again with exciting, first ever, opportunities. I now not only have a theatre program, but we also started a debate team and a dance team. He listens to the wants and suggestions of the students. He has created an atmosphere that lets them know they matter. While he welcomes all suggestions, he also expects great things in return. There is not a day that passes that he misses the opportunity to give a compliment or notice the greatness in someone. He is fair, friendly, and caring to everyone he meets. After working in a district where it felt like no ones opinion matter, coming to QHS was amazing. The staff supports him and each other and that is something that really helps when dealing with teenagers. He and his family are seen at almost every event supporting all of us and if they’re not, you can bet they will be the first to congratulate on a social media post or through a text message. Dr. Savage is one of the nicest men I have ever met and much deserving of this award.

Behind the numbers, the ratings, the proof of what I'm about to write, is an energy in the form of a light in his eyes, a step which is more of a skip, and greetings that seem to always include words such as "wonderful". Wonderful has been his effect on Quitman School District. He has challenged us, lifted us up, high fived, and passionately spoke of a collective dream. He has called us by name and claimed us as a nation. In only a year he turned our heads and made us look at ourselves in a different perspective. When he said, "We won't quit," we wanted to dig.
The key, I think, is he started with our kids. A teacher first, he began with the ones who have always been at the center of his heart and in the process quickly won over those who had the same heart as his.
He's brilliant. He knows data and implements strategy and has amassed mentors and mentees he is proud to call friends. He has served and is serving as an example to all of us at Quitman School District. We consider him a gift. Giving him Life Changer of the Year is not only perfect as a representation of how he has assisted a multitude of kids and adults to change their own lives, but it is also a way of you helping us to show him how much he is appreciated.

Dr. Savage has made a positive impact at our high school. The students have a good rapport with him and I think that's very, very important. He genuinely supports the students and his staff. He's community minded and seems to understand the concept of "it takes a village".

Dr Savage has been a life changer for the students at QHS but not only for them also the people in our community. Clarke county is beginning to see that no matter your race, social status, previous academic achievements or lack of, our students are growing and seeing themselves as successful. Even before becoming principal in Quitman, Mr. Savage was changing lives. My son was a student at Hattiesburg High when he was Assistant Principal and took notice of students, knew their names and sought out opportunities for them. I was fortunate enough to teach under him and he was a smiling face encouraging us EVERY day to do our best for the students. It is a pleasure to watch what he is doing now.
