I told her how you applauded her for doing the right thing. She was very pleased and told me that she had great respect and a lot of love for you. I am truly relieved and happy that the wrong was righted and very grateful for the kind and wise words you told my son on Sunday. That is indeed true of Dr.Manuel, as she has been instrumental in my development, growth, and career objectives. One way that she has been a life changer for me, is my auntie Brenda personally took over guardianship of me in junior high school and sought to arrange for my life's path to be redirected. As a youth growing up in the concrete jungle of South Central Los Angeles, I was an at-risk youth growing up in an environment saturated with gangs, drugs, and violence. With a mother addicted to drugs, and no father in the home, my demise was imminent, and my aunt was determined not to allow me to become a statistic! Without reservation, my aunt arranged for me to reside with her, despite her demanding work schedule, ongoing projects, staff meetings, and other obligations. She worked tirelessely, and even sacrificed much of her social life to live as an example of integrity. I can safely say that without having Brenda A. Manuel as my aunt, I would be dead or in jail. I was like a nice piece of art at a rundown thrift store, that was salvaged, restored, and taken to a place unimaginable. She took me and molded me and led by example. Her drive and determination, led me as I graduated high school and went on to graduate at Clark Atlanta University. Her example of humility and sacrifice, is why I am involved with youth organizations mentoring, and why I have partnered with local police stations to do communiy clean-up projects. Her example of hard work, is why I am a certifed CIF referee in three sports, working year-round modeling teamwork and sportsmanship througout the Southbay, greater Los Angeles area, and in various counties. I attribute my desire for learning and mastering a skill to my aunt, because I was able to watch her continue to strive for greatness year after year. If I was to nominate anyone in the entire state of California, for "LifeChanger of the Year", Dr. Brenda A. Manuel, would be a first ballot vote for me hands down! I judge someone's character, by who they are when the lights are dim and no one is around. She put together the group of men because she saw the need for sincere commitment of black men in our black communities. Her studies had shown that where a black man is present in a family, a community - in society, that our young black men, high schoolers especially would perform better academically and in our communities. Doctor Manuel was methodical in creating the Great Minds group. She shared data and analyses and insight and experience at regular meetings that never lost focus or intent or drive. Doctor Manuel realized that her leadership of this group of "community power men" could be difficult for any number of reasons but she never faltered. Doctor Manuel brought the right amount of coaching, the right amount of encouragement, the right amount of care. She showed both nurturing and leadership skills as she, a woman, guided a group of black men to become a cohesive "focused" force in helping to guide the lives of our young black men. Any number of challenges within and outside of the group could have derailed our efforts, but because one woman of great insight and intellect saw fit to "guide from beside", to coach and lead and inspire, and hold accountable, our group progressed and grew and became ever more influential in our community of high school young men of color. We have now put on our third or forth Young Men of Color conference - each year bigger than the year before. This past February included close to if not over 300 young High School men from so-called at risk, urban schools. These young men gather on a Saturday morning probably rising a 6AM to come to learn about important life skills like Financial Literacy and How To Interact with Police, and How to Treat Women and many, many more subjects-- but just as importantly, thanks to Doctor B, they come with a chance to interact with black men who care. Doctor Manuel's program, structured in the sound old tradition of hands-on care, is a tremendous success because she has unlocked the power of community engagement at a very critical stage in the growth of our young black and brown men. She has strength not just in leadership, but in coaching and nurturing and logistics and in leading from the background - a very difficult skill. I have had the privilege of knowing Doctor Manuel through this program and through the launch of the Aspen Challenge and have seen her at work in other LAUSD programs that are after the last school bell. She is clearly committed and has been a gracious, caring and exemplary leader to follow. I recently met Dr.Manuel at CSU Fresno as she facilitated the Black Minds Matter competition between my team of Black Warriors and 5 other teams. Prior to attending the competition, Dr Manuel had conference calls with me and other advisors in preparation for this event. Dr. Manuel was skillful in establishing the structure and providing guidance to me and other advisor such that we could prepare our students for this competition. As a results of my conversations with Dr. Manuel, I was able to help my students take on a major project at our High school regarding the high suspension of African American students compared to whites. I'm so inspired by her ability to put this in motion through me, my students, onto our Middle school and other schools in the surrounding schools and districts in the Stockton area. I'm doubly inspired after reading her story of the many things she has done and is doing to give back the voice and power our African American students need if they are to succeed in their rapidly change environment and world. Since meeting Dr. Manuel, her passion for students has led her into school and district leadership. As the creator and director of the Los Angeles Unified School District Student Involvement, Development and Empowerment Unit, Dr. Manuel is a strong and devoted advocate for the student voice. She is highly respected for her work in cultivating student leaders, as she serves as a mentor and role model for many students, including Rawles. Her dedication to students is evident in her professional endeavors through the Aspen Challenge, LAUSD Youth Conferences, Associated Student Body Meetings, Superintendent Student Advisory Council, the LAUSD Student Member of the Board position and the Village Movement. Dr. Manuel always teaches that success begins with believing in yourself and having a growth mindset. Dr. Manuel saw a need to have a more inclusive student voice at both the school site and district level. She met that need by creating a forum for elected Associated Student Body (ASB) Presidents and their Leadership Advisors to meet during the school year. These meetings serve as a liaison from the Student Involvement, Development and Empowerment Unit to LAUSD school sites. Meetings often discuss student body finances, how to amplify the student voice and involvement, school climate, elections of the Student Member of the Board, and achieving the District goals: 100% graduation, proficiency for all, 100% attendance, parent and community engagement and school safety. ASB Presidents and their leadership teams are responsible for completing a year-long project in support of one or more District goals to facilitate concrete and sustainable change at their school site. Dr. Manuel teaches student leaders how to positively impact their school community and cultivate an effective and welcoming learning environment for all students. Additionally, the LAUSD Superintendent Student Advisory Council (SSAC) is a committee of selected high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors originated and organized by Dr. Manuel that meets with Superintendent Dr. Michelle King six times per academic year. This committee directly advises Dr. King from the student perspective on District policy and initiatives, and is responsible for sharing knowledge gained with their Associated Student Body President and Leadership team. Similar to the role of ASB President, members of the Superintendent Student Advisory Council conduct annual student projects to provide viable solutions to targeted issues at their respective school sites. These projects are then presented to the Superintendent, distinguished LAUSD personnel, and student leaders. This council also advises the Student Member of the Board, who attends all SSAC meetings. Dr. Manuel created this council to serve as a link between the Superintendent, Student Board Member, and LAUSD students. She strives to make leadership opportunities such as this accessible and attainable for all students. She believes each student’s voice is valuable and should be heard. Dr. Manuel reinstituted the position of Student Member of the Board of Education. Now, the students of LAUSD are represented directly by a board member whom they elected. This position has proven to be effective in bringing the student perspective, which is necessary in considering decisions within LAUSD. The Student Board Member (SBM) has the ability to propose resolutions for the Board’s review. Though the duty to speak for over 600,000 students seems daunting, Dr. Manuel ensures the SBM remains connected to the interests and needs of students through focus groups, SSAC advising, ASB meetings and open dialogues via email and social media. Furthermore, Dr. Manuel founded the Village Movement, an initiative for LAUSD employees and volunteers to mentor LAUSD students. Its goal is to provide students with the necessary skills to enable them to be college-prepared and career-ready. This movement exposes students to role models who have overcome their own challenges in order to be productive citizens. The Village Movement has expanded to 28 schools serving over 420 students. Dr. Manuel created the Village Movement to help students feel competent, confident, connected to others, respected and in control of their learning. This initiative improves the lives of students individually and collectively by cultivating a safe, nurturing environment where students are comfortable sharing their personal and academic lives with their Villager. Here is my thank you email to my community of supporters . Good Afternoon My Community I want to thank each of you for supporting me in my bid for the Life Changer of the Year award from National Life Group Insurance. Even though I was not one of the national winners, I was a winner because I was able to receive my flowers while I can truly enjoy them. Over 375 of my family, friends, colleagues, and supporters took time out of their busy day to write a comment in support of my nomination. I have read each and every one of them and they have brought tears of joy to my eyes. Some things that were shared I was not even aware of but what I have learned is that everything that you do makes an impact on someone. You may not know to what extent. So the bottom line is to be the best person that you can be and that is what I have tried to be. One young man who wrote a comment was a student of mine in high school. He passed away recently and the comment that he wrote will stay with me the rest of my life. I would not have known that I had impacted his life if this nomination had not provided an opportunity for him to let me know. So that is why I am grateful because so many of you let me know how God has allowed me to make an impact and I am so honored to have done so.
