Carolyn Rethwisch was nominated by Kelly Mcmillan, the parent of a student.

McMillan's daughter was like any other fifth-grade student going into sixth grade, not really knowing where to fit in. When she entered Mrs. Rethwisch's room, it was so exciting and inviting. The way the room was decorated for Astronaut’s Club piqued her students' interests immediately.

Mrs. Rethwisch and her students won 2nd place in the National Student Astronaut Challenge where they worked together to launch and land a space shuttle. The finals of the competition took place at the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida.

"She is truly an inspiration to all children and parents who come in contact with her," Mcmillan said. "You're not only getting the best out of what a teacher can possibly teach, but you’re getting someone who truly puts more than 100% into your children! We all have a story, but hers is truly as remarkable as she is! Our kids work very hard beside her until 6:30 in the evening for the Astronaut’s Club challenge in NASA, and everyone always has such a great attitude. Two words to describe Mrs. Rethwisch: Heaven sent!"

Carolyn is the teacher everyone needs to have once in your lifetime. She is so inventive with her teaching. She is one of the best teachers i know. She was an amazing mentor bringing the rest of the teachers up with her. She was alwys doing new things and the smile she would get when the students finally got the lesson. From her Macoroni Skeleton to her interactive notebooks it was easy to learn and excel in all. I am extremely thankful to have had her as a mentor. Her students will be game changers... Because Carolyn has changed the teaching game..

Mrs. R could motivate a snail to run. Her passions for bringing out the best in a student can’t be counted. As a volunteer with her Astronaut Club it amazes me what she has taught these young students. They start as individuals and end as a team working together in the manner of NASA. You will never find a person more qualified, however, devotion to education is her strength. She’s a motivator and a leader. I am blessed to have met her and have her in my life.

I have worked with Carolyn Rethwisch for several years at Isle of Hope K8 School in Savannah, Georgia. She is one of those educators that not only inspires the students, but the staff members that work with her. As my fifth graders begin turning their attention toward middle school, there is a buzz about the world-class groups they can join under the care of "Mrs. R." The amount of hard work and energy that she puts in to making each child feel special is amazing. I can easily say that my career, and our school is much better having Carolyn's devotion, creativity and love in our halls.

Ela Kaye Eley Posted over a year ago

Carolyn Rethwisch continually instills a sense of purpose and pride into her students. She gives of herself constantly and won't accept less than her own best or less than her students' best! After only 3 years, she led her students to 2nd in the nation for the National Astronaut Challenge. The last 2 years in a row, her students took home the Apollo 13 Award for Teamwork, given to the team that best exemplified the spirit of collaboration. This award is the one that made Ms. Rethwisch the most proud of her students because it showed more of how they were able to overcome adversity and pull together as a team. I think Ms. Carolyn Rethwisch is the LifeChanger of the year! #LCOY

You are an inspiration and a motivation to many young lives. I appreciate your hard work for the students and your future Astronauts at Isle of hope. More than a teacher you are a mom to my daughter. You were a guide, philosopher and you mean everything for her. We wish you a good luck for all your future endeavors. We love you Mrs.Rethwisch.

I have worked with Carolyn at isle of Hope School for five years. Her dedication and efforts in everything she does are totally focused on her students. She appears to be tireless, as she spends countless after school hours in support of bettering the educational opportunities for the students. Carolyn is always there for the kids, no matter which grade level when they need help. Carolyn is the lead coordinator for the NASA Space competition and over the last three years they have achieved national recognition. She is currently our teacher of the year and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this recognition.

Hard to put into words the gratitude, the respect, the honor, the fortitude, the selflessness, the drive, the will for life, the need to help others, and everything above and beyond!! The list goes on and on....that would be some of the words to describe Mrs. R! I have had the pleasure in meeting her through several fund raising events. Always going above and beyond for the children , and the community!! She deserves much praise for she takes on more than most of us can bare!! True story!! Thank you for everything you do for others!! It doesn't go unnoticed!! Xoxo

I met mama C a couple years ago and when I met Carlea and over the years as our friendship grew I got to learn all about this crazy lady!! She always put other people needs infront of her own which says a lot about a person! She has quickly been someone that I have loved (maybe because she’s my best friends mom) or just because she is someone I aspire to be like.. selfless, loving, caring, Godly and a little crazy too ??

Lacy Cabrera Posted over a year ago

If I had to pick a few words to describe Mrs. Rethwisch, they would include dedicated, focused, and fun. She is dedicated: overcoming her own physical health battles and putting in lots of extra hours with her students. She is focused: requiring much of her students through rigorous training in class and after school. She is fun: she laughs and jokes and kids love her. As a friend, she is a good listener, an encourager and very well-deserving as life-changer of the year. Her friendship has changed mine!

I met Carolyn about 20 years ago when my son attented Teachers Hands Academy. From the beginning I could see how caring and genuine Carolyn was and her love of what she does best....Teach! Her approach is different from most conventional teachers which males her special. My son, who is now 30 and struggled in public school with learning disabilities, learned so much attending Teachers Hands and was encouraged to do his best. I am thankful for her many years later and her continued caring and encouragement.

Carlea Rethwisch Posted over a year ago

I may be biased here because she's my Momma, but she was also once my teacher. I've been lucky enough to watch my mom grow each year as a teacher and as a loved member of her community. Her day doesn't end when her students go home - her heart is wrapped around each one of those kids and she works day in and out to find out how to help them grow as people more and more each day. I've seen kids with extremely low self esteem flourish because someone (my mom) finally believed they could. I grew up being taught we are all world changers, something I know she still teaches her students to this day. She's a world changer for each student that walks through her doors because she invests her heart and teaches them how to leave her class to make the world a better place around themselves.

Kim McKean Posted over a year ago

I met Carolyn Rethwisch probably almost a decade ago when I befriended her daughter during my college years. I frequently visited the house to hang out with her daughter (and Carolyn’s granddaughter) and she was always very sweet and definitely a strong and determined woman. There was a point in time where I had nowhere to go with all my belongings unless I wanted to move back to my hometown, and Carolyn was nice enough to take me in while I figured out my situation. I always appreciated the mom-like figure she proved to be even to those who weren’t her own children. To this day, I am close friends with two of her daughters and I follow Carolyn on Facebook. The love she has for both her family and career is inspiring, and I hope that one day I can be half the woman, mom, and grandmother (and maybe even some sort of teacher!) Carolyn is today. Her and her family will forever hold a special place and my heart and no one deserves a life changer award more than this amazing woman!

Mrs.Rethwisch has changed my life in so many ways. We have had astronaut club which she worked hard to bring me to nationals and all my friends. She helped me when I was stressed to get my grades up and helped so many other people. She has to help 6 interns to achieve their goal too. She works hard for all of us. I want her to go to Hawaii and win this competition because she deserves it!!!

My every interaction with Carolyn has been very positive, and reading how she exemplifies great teaching, compassion, vision, and generosity, from so many sources, adults and children, shows she well deserves the nomination of "Life Changer!"

Debbie Alexander Posted over a year ago

Absolutely! Carolyn has been a huge positive influence with our students, and the staff of Isle of Hope as well. From humble beginnings, a story of its own, to the strong female role model teacher for our early middle school science classes, to the phenomenal math and science leader for the Astronaut Club, Carolyn is a rare jewel. Illness and personal tragedy may slow her down, but she has never, ever quit. A fighter, an incredible Christian woman, a teacher, a mother, a sister and a friend. Carolyn is a remarkable educator and those under her tutelage have been truly blessed.

Dr. Linda Oliver Posted over a year ago

Carolyn is famous at our school for the work she has done with NASA and our astronaut team. It is impressive work indeed. In addition to that, I love the fact that she is an expert at identifying and remediating holes in students' knowledge and bringing them up to grade level work. As an eighth grade teacher, and the highest grade level in our school, I am well acquainted with what students are missing by the time they get to me and how that impacts their continued academic success. Carolyn increases students' confidence and sense of efficacy by honing in on their greatest need and then taking them where they need to go. She is truly a master teacher!

Aside from her parents, no one has as deep and lasting an effect on the life of an 11 year-old girl as her teacher. Carolyn Rethwisch carries this trust and promise with perfect grace, lifting the children in her charge to palace they’ve never been and one they’ll never forget. As though this weren’t enough she helps them to discover in themselves an even greater orbit, as it were, as members of her Astronauts Club. The Fiddlernauts (the school mascot is the fiddler crab) have achieved national recognition as second place winners of NASA’s Astronaut Challenge. Under Carolyn Rethwisch’s loving leadership, they have made their community proud of them and of our school.

Leigh Dailey Posted over a year ago

Great teacher- deserves very much!

Louis M Posted over a year ago

Carolyn Rethwisch taught my children for 3 years at Galileo School for Gifted Learning. She changed their lives in ways they probably will never understand. Not only did she teach each and every child as an individual, but she instilled within them a desire to learn more, to stretch beyond their limits and become the best they could be. She was known for the the quote "For of those to whom much is given, much is required". She made sure that her students knew that they had an obligation beyond themselves to make the world a better place. From her wild ideas (sure, we can make trebuchets to launch pumpkins for the fall festival), to her garden for kids to feel the soil under their fingers, to her crazy math (Let's learn base 2, 3 and so on) she made her students grow outside what they ever thought was possible. And at her very core is love for children. To give back the blessings she herself was given to the next generations. An unselfish drive to help everyone she possibly can. If that doesn't truly describe a lifechanger, I don't know what does!

Lacy Cabrera Posted over a year ago

Lives are changed anytime someone looks beyond themselves and sees the needs and dreams of others. I asked a 6th grader this past week, before I read all of the sweet comments on this app, “Hey, what do you like the best about Mrs. R?” Without hesitation, she started her list of reasons why Mrs. R. Is her favorite teacher. Her comments boiled down to one idea...”she listens.” Thank you Mrs. R. for what you mean to so many because you hear them. God blessed me with a new friend recently- and it hasn’t taken her long to change my life too. Your gifts came from God. Thank you for using them for His glory girl. ??????????

Carolyn has a huge part in who I am today. When I had my daughter me and her were homeless and not only did Carolyn help me she took me under her wing as if I was one of her own daughters. Without her me and my daughter would have been on the streets with her just being 2 weeks old. She also gave me the opportunity to get my diploma when no one else believed in me. If it wasn’t for her and Barb I wouldn’t have graduated high school and wouldn’t have the amazing job I have today. She gave me a chance when all I wanted to do was give up. She believed in me when no one including myself believed in me. She showed me that everyone struggles but it’s what you do with your struggles that make you come out of it. I owe her my life. I thanks God everyday that he brought her into my life because who knows where I’d be today. I definitely wouldn’t have an amazing job and my own place that for sure. Carolyn deserves the world. She helps so many people when she has her own problems. She’s the most caring person I’ve ever met in my life. She puts others first without even a blink of the eye. There aren’t enough thanks yous in the world to express the gratitude she deserves. And like I said if it wasn’t for her I’d probably still be a homeless nothing. So thank you Carolyn for giving me that chance that no one else would. I owe you my life. I love you more then words can express.

Our son, Ian, was lucky enough to have Mrs. Rethwisch as a “Gifted” teacher in elementary school here in Florida. The Galileo School for Gifted Learning in Sanford was a brand new charter school at the time, created to teach gifted children with a curriculum that was more indivually based on a student’s level. The new school took some time to “ramp up” and had a lot of initial turnover with teachers, etc. at first. Carolyn Rethwisch was paramount in incorporating the gifted teaching style that was the very reason we sent our child to that school. She made every learning experience creative, exciting, and fun and treats every student and their parents like family. She is completely dedicated to her kids, spending many unpaid hours after school time to create newer and more creative ways to teach her kids!! Ian adores her still (he is now a 9th grader;-) and misses her. Ian has had many great teachers, but none can hold a candle to Mrs. Rethwisch!! She is truly one of a kind and has earned and deserves this honor!! We love her!!

I can go on and on about my Ms. R. we take possession of her because she possesses the responsibility of molding young minds to be great thinkers, artist, scientist, and engineers. My daughter always had a vivid imagination and Ms. R cultivated that vision and made it great. She recognized her talent and taught her to have confidence in herself, gave her responsibility. In turn she helped me as well allow Bella to grow and teach her to make decisions as preteen that will help her in making decision as adult. Ms. R loves her students and she has passion for her job. Know in my heart she has never worked a day in her life because it has been said if you do something you love you will never work a day in your life. We all know she works very hard but also know she truly loves what she does so it’s not a job, it is her way of life and I believe she wouldn’t have it any other way. #LCOY

I met Caroyln many years ago. I was working at a preschool as a teacher's assistant. She came and spoke to all of the employees, We learned a lot from her. What got me the most was her passion for teaching. You could see it in her eyes, and the way she spoke about her students. She was amazing. What I took from that training, was I wanted more. I wanted to feel that passion. And I wanted to work for her. And I was Blessed to be able to work with her. Since then I have worked with many teachers, I have been in many classrooms. And I have worked with many teachers that have have passion, but not anywhere near how she feels, she truly loves each of her students, and she makes learning fun. Because of her, I feel that passion, especially for students that learn differerntly than the norm. She also helped my family personally, my daughter quit school her senior year in January, several years later Carolyn was able to help her, because of her contacts and her experience, she got my daughter to graduate with a diploma. As soon as you step in her classroom, you are forever changed, as a student, teacher and a parent. I would give her thousands of votes if I could.

Both of my children had Ms. Rethwisch in 5th grade. She was, without a doubt, one of of best teachers they have ever had. She taught the kids in a way that I’m not sure they even realized they were learning. They never knew what the day would bring - they could be “blowing something up”, writing love notes to friends, or planting a garden. My children and I will always cherish the memories made with Ms. Rethwisch- she’s truly an exceptional teacher with a heart of gold!!!

Ela Kaye Eley Posted over a year ago

2 years ago I watched Ms. Rethwisch turn a group of 10 middle school students into ASTRONAUTS who won 2nd place in the National Student Astronaut Challenge. Ms. R, as the students affectionately call her, spent 3 hours a day after school for 8 weeks with the student astronauts as they prepared for the national competition. Students from all of the other schools involved in the competition had amazing working flight simulators at their schools, and the students at Isle of Hope were practicing on wooden crates with taped on switch labels! However, nothing was going to stop these kids from their mission. Ms. R. instilled in each of the them the belief that they could do it. They had to learn to work together, how to launch and land a space shuttle, and faced many other challenges along the way. The finals of the competition took place at the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida. These students never doubted what they had learned and what they were going to do. For these students, failure was never an option! Students took ownership of every part of the competition! In fact, one young student who had been bored and sleeping in all of his classes became one of the leaders for getting everything setup and working. Not only did he begin staying awake in his classes, he also stayed after school every day to work on the project! I've heard many parents express surprise at what their child was able to do, but with Ms. R. as their greatest cheerleader, the students were able to go above and beyond what anyone thought they could do. At the beginning of school this year, over 60 students wanted to be part of the Astronaut Club, and over 20 of them passed the first round of testing, thus resulting in 2 teams that went to the national competition this year, both of which placed in the top 5 teams for launching and landing the space shuttle! The reason for all of the excitement about being part of the teams isn't because they have an undying love for space exploration. No! It's because Ms. R. gives her all and pours every ounce of her being into her students and into making sure they know they are loved! I will not be surprised at anything these kids accomplish as adults because of what Ms. R. has inspired them to become! If you are truly looking for someone who has changed lives, Carolyn Rethwisch is the person you want! #LCOY

Mrs R. is a brilliant teacher who can really see the true potential of her students. She manages to make math and science fun! She gives more than 100% to "her kids" as she calls all her students. My children still talk about her, 6 years after she was their teacher. They still say that she was the best teacher EVER!

A lady that was born to teach! Carolyn’s ability to engage children no matter what their learning level is a skill few teachers possess. She will work until she deciphers out the best way each student in her charge learns. Watching Carolyn interact with students is like watching an orchestra play a beautiful sonnet. Every student is actively learning even when they had said 5 minutes earlier Caroline deserves this recognition for many years of long hard work. Please consider her for this award.

I am REALLY PROUD of this Woman. She was the ANGEL that God put in my life in 2004 until 2010. When I came to this country as a single mother of 5 kids. She was not only my boss , she was the most important person in our lives. Her compassion, her kindness , her LOVE for the others help me to understand that God uses her in many ways. I saw her many times taking care of one of my daughters as her own. She is MORE THAN a TEACHER. Her pure heart and her arms ALWAYS are open for ANY person in need.I Love You Carolyn Rethwisch.

Carolyn Rethwisch is an extraordinary teacher, woman and friend. For reasons which I feel quite priveleged to share, I unreservedly nominate her as Lifechanger of the Year. Carolyn is my daughter's homeroom, STEAM and science teacher at Isle of Hope K-8 School in Savannah, GA. From the moment I met her I was instantly engaged with her aura of dedication, and with her determination to encourage the childrens' interest in science. Despite her continual illnesses and health challenges, this woman has tirelessly proven to be an anchor in education for this generation. She stops at nothing to see her kids learn, and her uninterrupted faith amid her situation is not only astounding, but inspiring. This woman in her rigourous trials of health took not only one- but 2 qualifying teams from IOH to the national Student Astronaut Challenge at Kennedy Space Center/NASA. And under her direction, our school not only won 2nd in the nation, but received the first ever Apollo 13 Award. My words testify- this woman without a doubt is a lifechanger. -Salua Brannen (Aisha), Isle of Hope K-8, Savannah, GA

To know this woman is to love her, to hear her story is to say Glory be to God, to watch her with your child is a blessing, and have her as a mother/teacher is a Hallelujah praise. To havw a teacher that puts her all and then some into your child means more than the world to me.

Thank you, for the guidance, support and all the inspiration that you so lovingly give to all the students. With all the encouragement you give to the children, they have reached many goals they may not have been able to achieve with out YOU . We need more teachers like you. Thank you for caring for the children more than you care for yourself

I've heard nothing but the best. Outstanding performance as a teacher as well as a warrior in her personal life. Her strength surpasses many as she faces battles and does so with a smiling face. I couldn't think of anyone more deserving!

I have never meet anyone who has the most drive for the children. As her health steadily declines her attitude has always been positive from being around the kids giving her joy. Best teacher hands down ??
