LifeChanger of the Year Nominee Profile

Vern Weygandt was nominated by his principal, Margaret Peach

Dr. Weygandt has inspired and equipped many students with skills they never imagined they could have.  He has created so many specialized band groups that give students not only a place to fit, but to thrive. 

"He loves them, he pushes them, and he makes it ok just to be you.  He is the most welcoming person and is accepting of whoever you happen to be," Peach said. "I have watched students who felt like they had little to offer or just did not quite fit, transform into confident musicians and students who have a place near celebrity level in our school."

The school's band program has grown from a single class into two jazz bands, flute choir, percussion ensemble, brass choir, master musician mentoring program and a rock band all in the span of two years.  Every student not only has a place to fit, but to thrive. Dr. Weygandt's students love being with him and soak up every ounce of knowledge and skill he imparts.  The eighth grade students cried at the end of the year at the thought of leaving him and moving to the high school.  He was selected this year as his school's Teacher of the Year by his peers because of his work with students.

 "What a gift to have had Dr. Weygandt as your teacher, friend, mentor, confidante, encourager and supporter," Peach said. "He is absolutely awesome and clearly a LifeChanger for 200 of our students each year."
