Nicole Wellman Noble was nominated by her colleague, Leslie Nguyen.
Because of passionate and committed educators like Ms. Wellman, Bright Star Schools is closer to ensuring all students receive a high quality education that allows them to be successful in today’s world, regardless of who they are and where they live. On a daily basis, Ms. Wellman embodies the characteristics of an excellent leader and educator who has a proven track record of making a positive impact on the lives of high quality teachers and students.
Bright Star Schools is one of the strongest high-performing public charter schools in Los Angeles, serving over 2,800 students in low-income communities. The organization currently has a staff of 350-400 employees; within the next few years, the organization will grow in size and impact and open up additional schools across Los Angeles.
In her current role, Ms. Wellman oversees the organization’s Differentiated Professional Development Programs, including National Board Certification and Teacher Leadership Consortia. She is also the leader in Teacher Evaluation and Development Process and Systems at Bright Star Schools. Because of her strong character and skill sets, not only as an educator but as a human, Bright Star Schools has been able to create a positive, nurturing, and joyful culture that educators need to thrive professionally and personally.
"I’ve known Nicole for about three years now, and it has been such a privilege working alongside her," Nguyen said. "With a people first mindset, Nicole consistently holds herself to high moral and ethical standards while she works tirelessly to ensure our organization recruits, retain, and develops our teachers to accelerate teachers’ effectiveness; ultimately accelerating our students’ excellence and achievement."
Ms. Wellman plays an integral role in Bright Star's strong teacher retention as well. 90% of the teachers were retained across the organization in 2017.

I feel so lucky to work with Nicole! She is passionate, innovative, hardworking, positive, and efficient in the work she does. She is thoughtful and kind, ensuring everyone feels validated as a professional and valued as a person. Her involvement with our mentoring program, teacher evaluation system, org-wide professional development, wellness initiative and hiring/onboarding practices (just to name a few) have tremendously impacted our organizational structure, culture, instruction, and people satisfaction within Bright Star Schools. Nicole Wellman is an incredible asset to Bright Star Schools. She provides guidance and direction for our Teacher Development Program and serves as a thought partner and leader in working with our principals. I am honored to call Nicole a friend and colleague.
Nicole has a HUGE heart for educators! She not only cares about our professional growth, but she also cares about us as human beings. Every time that I bump into her in the halls of my school, she is always extremely friendly and super supportive! Her genuine care and dedication to her job is inspiring!
Nicole has grown our Talent department tremendously at Bright Star Schools. We now have a vetted, research-based system in place to hire the best teachers for our schools. Beyond that, she works tirelessly to further develop our teachers with the Mentor Program through the New Teacher Center. Her skills in organization, and structure have supported teacher evaluation, professional development, teacher leadership and more grant funding for other valuable projects for our network. Her contributions are invaluable!
Nicole is a tremendous leader and the standard at which she measures her own success is humbling and inspiring to everyone at Bright Star Schools. Her deep investment and relentless drive is abundantly evident to anyone who is fortunate enough to cross her path. I can't think of a better candidate to receive this award!
I have known Nicole all of her life. I have been around for a long time and been exposed to all types of people, and if you are lucky enough to find someone who is honest, intelligent, kind and a delight to be with, and lucky enough to call her your friend, you are talking about my Granddaughter, Nicole Noble Wellman

Nicole is always positive and eager to help those around her in every interaction with her colleagues. Her friendly demeanor makes working with her easy and enjoyable. Nicole is a tremendous leader and an irreplaceable asset at Bright Star Schools. She is extremely intelligent and insightful and has an extraordinary level of emotional intelligence. Conversations with her are validating and energizing, even when those around her are in a state of frustration or negativity she's regularly able make them feel heard and understood and to help them approach tasks with positive focus. There are few people I've know how have a greater ability to help people be their best like Nicole can.

Nicole is the most positive person that I have ever met. She always take time out of her busy schedule to check in with individuals and genuinely ask how they are doing. I don't think that she has ever forgotten a person's name. She is a great leader and makes our school community a brighter place!

Nicole is a passionate, committed and incredibly talented educator. Through her leadership, Bright Star Schools has been able to offer robust, job embedded mentoring support to our new teachers, thereby increasing overall teacher effectiveness and retention.
