School: The Foundation Academy
School District: The Foundation Academy
City, State: Jacksonville, FL
Anne Bruno was nominated by Valarie Love, the parent of a student.
Anne Bruno has been an educator for 36 years. Beginning in the South Bronx, she moved across country to teach in Pomona, CA, backtracked to Texas, and then went back to the East Coast to Jacksonville in 1991. She has been at The Foundation Academy for nine years. Although she started as a math teacher, her responsibilities grew over the years. She is now the senior adviser, doing transcripts, scheduling students, teaching Dual Enrollment and serving as an instructional coach to other teachers. She chaired her school's accreditation in 2013 and is leading her school down a path of growth and development.
Mrs. Bruno has been changing lives for many years, and still keeps in touch with alumni who now have their own children and grandchildren. She has a dedicated Facebook page for alumni who need help with info on financial aid, scholarships and more.
"Her students always remember two specific things about her: One, her high expectations, and two, to respect each other as well as authority," Love said.
Mrs. Bruno has made her senior advisory a place that students can call home, and she is always there for students when the going gets tough. From driving students who don't have a ride, to visiting students in the hospital, Mrs. Bruno is an example of dedication and love for her vocation.
"I am fortunate to know Mrs. Anne as not only as a colleague, but also as a senior advisor to my son this year," Love said. "I know many students wouldn't go to college, let alone graduate, if it were not for her dedication, love and support of every student that is in her class or seeks her advice. She truly changes lives!"
