Nadia Hionides was nominated by a colleague who wishes to remain anonymous.
Ms. Hionides has been a leader in the Jacksonville community for over 30 years. In addition to starting the Foundation Academy in 1988 and the Jacksonville Science Festival six years ago, she has worked tirelessly with her family in community service and activism for all echelons of the city to be able to participate in rigorous discourse. In 2016, she received the Eve Award for outstanding women of Jacksonville giving back to the city.
The Foundation Academy was her vision to instill children with respect for all faiths, critical thinking, scientific inquiry and the arts. Her vision has produced first-rate Broadway-worthy musicals, aquaponic gardens, business internships and apprenticeships for students, a science festival, and has made collaboration and technology available to all children, regardless of socioeconomic status, race, color or creed.
She received her Masters degree from the University of Pennsylvania, which trained her well in top level, Ivy-League expectations. The professional development provided to the top-notch instructors she brings in to enrich the students helps them become all that they can be. Post-secondary training or college is a focused plan for all to attain a level where they can give back.
"Today, Nadia's grandchildren are reaping the benefits of her vision," the nominator said. "As I watch them play the violin or read a script or dance, I know that their grandmother is truly a LifeChanger in Jacksonville. Alumni visit from all walks of life, and her daughters may one day take over her torch. She is vibrant and passionate, determined, diligent, curious and ready to share this vision with her teachers, students and community. We are lucky to have this kind of woman in our midst."
