Gabriel Cuevas was nominated by his principal, Greg Louie.
Mr. Cuevas is much more than a Campus Monitor. As a member of the school safety team, he works closely with student advisors, the associate principal of administrative services, and the principal.
In his role, Mr. Cuevas develops and nurtures positive relationships with many at-risk students, encouraging them to stay in school, make positive decisions, and seek help when they are struggling. He makes himself available whenever he is needed. In addition, he volunteers to oversee traffic in the student/staff parking lot.
As a baseball coach, Mr. Cuevas works closely with student athletes, reminding them of their academic responsibilities while honing their skills on the diamond. As a voting classified member of the School Site Council, Mr. Cuevas does a tremendous job of supporting his school's mission while ensuring the school stays true to its plan for student achievement.
As a member of the campus design team, Mr. Cuevas has actively participated in social emotional learning training, and is contributing to the creation and definition of the "Saints Wait." Most recently, he was involved in developing policies and practices for students who swear and use hateful rhetoric.
Mr. Cuevas accepted the role of TUPE (Tobacco Use and Prevention Education) Coordinator on campus to inspire healthy habits in students. As the TUPE Coordinator, he will have significant say as to how his school addresses student abuse of tobacco and marijuana, as well as how to educate students on the harmful health consequences.

I am fortunate to be married to this amazing man. Sitting here reading all the acknowledgements by peers, students and parents alike is absolutely amazing! He is truly truly an amazing soul. His heart is bigger than anyone I know. He truly cares about the students and their well being.. and he gives more than he receives without question. I have seen with my own eyes how much he makes a difference in the peoples lives he has touched...... While coaching baseball he purchased all the equipment necessary to facilitate the team from his own pocket with NO expectations of being paid back. Just so the kids had a fair chance against other schools. He has gone out of his way to pick up a kid who is stranded or needed a ride to practice, and even school time and time again. He has taken time out of his busy schedule to throw a ball & practice with a player who was struggling with the fundamentals of baseball, simply to build that players confidence. I could list so many more examples of good this man brings to the table.. I truly believe Gabriel has a special gift for connecting with people, students especially. He can relate to their everyday struggle and is a prime example of someone who has worked hard to make a better life.
With the things that he does, he makes our campus, and our school overall, a much better place. It's great to see someone like him helping around and making the school so much better.
I've known Gabriel for over 20 years, we met on the USS Thach FFG-43. His attention to his duties and responsibilities went above and beyond what was required of him.
More impressive in my opinion, was his ability to interact, befriend and empathize with everyone on the Ship, regardless of background/race/religion.
If he knew that you needed help on or off the Ship he was there, without hesitation.
I am not sure what this position requires but if you need someone who is intelligent, dedicated and empathetic to guide young impressionable young men/women, i can't think of anyone better suited for this role.

Whenever I drop my son off a school, I see Gabriel guiding students through traffic and making sure the street around Santa Teresa High School are safe for all students. When I first came to Santa Teresa I saw Mr. Cuevas patrolling the school. I thought he was a hardcore rule reinforcer. Although, on day I got kicked out of class and he passed by we had a conversation. And he was really nice and he inspired me to focus in school and not to mess around in class.

Mr. Cuevas is a great guy that watches over the entire campus to prevent drug use and actually cares about the students. He's always on his job interacting with the students and is honestly one of the administrators that has impacted me personally. Out of all the administrators, he is the one you always see on campus laughing and smiling with students and making sure our campus stays clean and appropriate. If a student is going through hard times, Mr. Cuevas will help you through it to see the positive side of life. I've never seen him mad, and he only makes the school safe and drug free. You usually expect administrators to be people that try to prevent you from having good times, but Mr. Cuevas is the exact opposite and refuses to refuse help from anyone seeking help. I can not count the amount of times that he has opened the gate for me after I forgot my stuff in my locker. I'm very happy someone on our campus does as great of a job as him. You can really see the contribution he puts in around here at this school. Mr. Cuevas is a very nice and will help anyone as best he can with whatever is asked of him. He basically protects our school to his full potential from use of tobacco and keeps the kids in school and tries to help as best he can. He helps the student athletes and always tells them that they also have to focus on their studies as well so they don't fall behind because they are only thinking about training for their sports. I have been going here for 2 years now and have seen Gabriel Cuevas in his little cart driving around school campus catching students ditching school or doing bad things, and I think that's awesome. As one of two advisors who works very closely with Gabe, I can say that it is a absolute pleasure working with him. Whenever we get that call from teachers that a student is out of control and needs to be picked up or is out of class without permission, he never hesitates to go search for that student. He is always upbeat and respectful to everyone he works with, even on the most stressful of days. He has a way of relating to our at-risk students in a way that puts them at ease and creates trust, and is therefore in a great position to reach them. He keeps water and food available for kids at all times, and he is alway available to talk to them when they're having problems. Gabe has helped to make the attendance office so much more than a place where kids get disciplined; he has helped to make it a place of warmth, comfort, and guidance and is very deserving of this recognition.
Gabe Cuevas, while a staff member and thus a representative of "the man," is well liked by a broad spectrum of students. A student who may lash out in class will willingly go talk to Mr. Cuevas.

As a campus monitor, Mr. Cuevas, has been there to support students needs in our classrooms and in support of staff with
vital communication. He has attended IEP meetings to support the social/emotional well being of students that needed that
extra support. His input has helped to give insight to staff and IEP Teams. I feel that he continues to be a positive role model
