Luz-Sarahi Cruz was nominated by member of the community, Rachel Grosso.

Mrs. Cruz is dedicated to her students, and is consistently looking for ways to support them on an educational and personal level. She recognizes that it takes a village to raise a child, and embraces her part in that role as an educator. She has a genuine interest in the lives of her students, and always wants what's best for them. Mrs. Cruz understands that a student's performance is influenced by events that go beyond the classroom doors. She takes time to get to know her students and their situations, and goes beyond the call of duty. Mrs. Cruz is resourceful and creative in coming up with activities to engage her students. She has offered crochet classes, bracelet making activities, introduced cultural music and offers guidance to those in need.

Rachel Grosso's daughter was a former student of Springstead High School, but did not have Mrs. Cruz as a teacher student. When Mrs. Cruz learned of her difficulties, she began looking for resources and books that may be of assistance.

"My cousin and brother-in-law were her students many years ago. When Mrs. Cruz and I reconnected in the community decades later, she remembered them, as well as our family and excitedly asked how they were," Grosso said. "This shows that students are not just statistics and numbers to her. She connects with them in a way that transcends time."

It doesn't matter if a child was her student or not - if there is a way Mrs. Cruz can reach out to help or make a positive influence in their lives, she does.

"I believe that her high moral integrity will make and has made an impact in the school," Grosso said. "She has the passion and desire to truly make a difference in the lives of those she encounters."

Mrs. Cruz has high expectations of their students and encourages everyone to always work at their best level. She has the ability to develop special relationships and strong rapport with students. Having some life experience outside the classroom and outside the realm of education is invaluable for putting learning into context and keeping school activities in perspective.

What makes Mrs. Cruz a life changer is simple to answer she is a wife, a mother and a dedicated teacher. Balancing all of the rolls she plays daily she takes time to make sure her family is first on her list. She makes sure her family has everything they need and are ready for their daily life. She comes home from work and cooks a warm meal for her family. She moves on to her next hat a professional teacher that redirects and defuses situation daily. With a warm smile she is always paying attention to her students needs and is always will to go the extra mile to make sure they will accomplish what they are expected to understand from her class. The extra hours she puts into her daily work go past the expected hours. The next hat she wears is a being a professional colleague attending meetings and sharing the information with other departments. However, she also plans and makes memorable for other colleagues. I have the highest respect for this outstanding professional. She planned and gave me a wonderful retirement party. It was wonderful and she made me feel very special. She truly knows how to reach out for others even though her life is busy enough she will make sure she takes special care of her friend also. She is a dear friend that I respect very much. She is truly a life changer.

Mrs. Cruz is one of the most amazing people I know! She has been there for me personally and educationally. She was there for me when I needed someone to talk to and thought I couldnt trust anyone. She is an important person in my life. When I had her as a teacher for two years, I sort of liked to slack. She always kept me on track and tried to help me even when sometimes I didnt deserve it! She never failed to help me out when I needed it! She is someone I will truly never forget!

Mrs. Cruz is one of the most amazing teachers i've ever had! Mrs. Cruz goes above and beyond in making sure her students receive all the help and advice they can get. Approximately 2 years ago I was in Mrs. Cruz's Spanish 1 class. From the beginning of the year to the end I had grown and learned so much from her! She has shown me many different techniques to remember words that sound alike but have different meanings. She was always helping each student individually and doesn't just teach straight out of the book. She actually makes sure that the students understand what they were taught before moving on with the next lesson. 2 years later and she is still committed to helping her students just like she did for me! She offers students to come during study hall and after school to get any extra help they need. Mrs. Cruz has helped me so much through these past 2-2 1/2 years. She has changed my life. Mrs. Cruz would constantly tell me to think positive and to never give up. Those words are the reason why I pulled myself together! She is a role model and an inspiration to me, and many others in this school/ community. She has been there for me, in class and in life. She makes projects educational and fun!!! Through her I have learned so much. Mrs. Cruz truly is a life changing teacher!!!

We will try to find the Words about a special person that we have come to know over the several years. It was easy to feel welcomed around her. She bring a feeling as being reunited with a dear friend that you have known for many many years. Her personality is a glow and she has a great sense of humor. We would refer to her as a special person who has many titles - Neighbor, Mom , Wife, Homemaker, Caregiver , Teacher, Friend, and without a doubt displays a great passion in all, above and beyond the call of duty despite her daily trials. You see Her caring, sharing, eagerness to help in any way to everyone who needs help. It shows in so many ways her humanity and love for others. She is truly a spiritual inspiration to us. We are blessed and proud to have her as a cherished friend, neighbor. But we would only refer to her and Her Family as a loved Members of our Family. Mrs.cruz helped create a wonderful retirement party for my wife. When I thought that my wife who had worked with Mrs. Cruz and shared many ways of reaching and teaching children was not going to have a retirement party. Mrs. Cruz while having the many responsibilities told me that she will organize and take care of everything. Well let me say it did not just turn out good it was fantastic. My wife was surprised and I was very greatful. Mrs. Cruz is a wonderful, caring, thoughtful person.

As a former colleague, Sarah Cruz was an inspiration to me and many for her dedication to the teaching profession, her team spirit with staff, and her wit and wisdom in working with a wide range of students. Her depth of compassion and caring for her students was unmatched. Sarah is one of those unsung heroes who at times seems to do the impossible, as a mom with many family responsibilities and as a master teacher. She is energetic in her commitment to uplift and transform the lives of her students, always seeking to bring out the very best in them. Sarah practices kindness and exemplifies caring in her deep-seated belief in her students. She especially reaches out to those others pass by. Her impact on her students is life-changing, as she not only teaches her subject but inspires them to reach higher, be more, and do more than they ever thought possible. What an honor and pleasure to share these thoughts and reflections on the best of our very best teachers, Sarah Cruz!

Katia Valdeos Posted over a year ago

I’ve known Sarah for several years, first as a colleague in the public school system and then as an esteemed friend. One of the things that most impacted me about her personality, besides being so cheerful and friendly, is how caring and thoughtful she was toward her students. She would know, almost instinctively, who was struggling at home, whether the student was hungry or whether he or she would have money to go on a field trip. She would make sure that the student would have money for food or the field trip. It amazes me that she finds the time to be a mother, a wife, a colleague, and such an excellent teacher. I know how caring Sarah is toward her students and what a positive impact she has had on their lives. They are fortunate to have her as their teacher, and I am extremely fortunate to have such an exceptional colleague like Sarah.

I met Sra. Cruz ten years ago, when I first became a full time teacher. Throughout all these years, she has shared her wisdom and knowledge of teaching with me. Her optimistic and positive advice is definitely worthy of being a life changer. She has a deep care for her students, and tries the best she can to do fun cultural activities to make an inspiring impact on them. In spite of the personal struggles in her daily life, she is always willing to help others. I complete agree that she should win the Life Changer Award. A teacher who positively influences her students is a Life Changer.

Joanna Martinez Posted over a year ago

As her substitute teacher, I’ve had the pleasure of covering her classes. Her lesson plans show how dedicated she is to her students and the effort she pours into her students not only to learn the language put to also learn about the diversity of the cultures. She goes beyond the classroom to engage with her beloved students in extra curricular activities. She is a devoted woman who wears many hats not only as an admired teacher but also as a devoted wife, caring mother and giving person. I’m just thankful to know her and call her my friend. I take this opportunity to congratulate her and extend my very best wishes!

Despite getting into multiple arguments with my mother, she has done a lot for me not only as just a mother but as a teacher/mentor as well. She has helped me with my struggles up and down. Not only with my struggles, but other people as well! I’ve even heard her tell me stories about certain students not only changing their life around, but attitude as well which means a lot. I love my mom, but with every family they have there ups and downs a lot. My mom is a life changer to her students and people need to know that. She can help anyone who comes across her just by talking with them. That’s awesome!

I had the pleasure of being in Senora Cruz's class for 2 years for Spanish 1 and 2. She always took care of me like I was her own child. No matter what was happening in the classroom she always had a positive attitude and a motherly like demeanor that all of her students recognized. It is obvious that she loves her job and loves kids through her passion for the Spanish language and through her tireless effort to make sure every student understands. She is definitely an amazing teacher and an even better person.

It’s been nearly 30 years since i spent time with her in a classroom setting but i remember her time with us being the highlight of the day. I’m so proud of her and everything she’s achieved. Her and her family have been life long friends with many happy memories to share. Loved deeply

I had Mr.s Cruz as a Spanish teacher in middle school at Parrott. I loved how she taught the class and how she use to come up with unique ways to make sure class wasn’t boring. i went from know not a lick of Spanish to walking out by the end of the school year having a big vocabulary full of snappish words. She is an excellent teacher.

I've known Sarah Cruz as a Nurse to her daughter and as a new friend. She is an extremely caring and nuturing woman. She would, truly, do anything to lend a helping hand to someone in need. I've witnessed, first hand, her dedication as a teacher and mentor to her students. I would marvel at the long (and very late!) hours she would spend at home dedicated to school projects. This is a woman who has faced many challenges in her life and still comes through with a smile. I, definitely, vote for Sarah Cruz as Life Changer of the Year! It would be a very well deserved title!!!

Nicolas Carayannis Posted over a year ago

Thank you Señora Cruz for being such a helpful and supportive teacher. I'm so glad I had you last year (9th grade). You have definitely given me that boost to pursue my dream to become bilingual because you have effectively taught me all the fundamentals of the Spanish language, including vocabulary, verb conjugations, and pronunciation. All of which are greatly helping me understand the structure of the language much easier. Furthermore, I have noticed how you also strive to help other students in your classes and enable them to become effective Spanish speakers. Spanish 1, or any other low-level foreign language class for that matter, is much more important than many people make it out to be because it is the start of a language-learning journey, and a teacher like you really enjoys to motive students to embark on that journey because of your passion for teaching and overall really nice character. Once again, thank you very much!

Senora Cruz is a perfect example of what teaching is all about! She is a caring individual who is in tune with her students needs. She is always available to lend a hand, and thinks of others before herself. We are fortunate to have her here at Springstead High School.

Elizabeth McLeod Posted over a year ago

Ms. Cruz is a co-worker with whom I have worked for a number of years, and when I was the reading coach at our school, I teamed up with her to do a variety of activities: CIS, vocabulary, and comprehension. What I found most impressive is that she invited me in. She wanted to challenge herself to learn new techniques so that she could better prepare her students for whatever tasks lay ahead. With her eye on the future, she knew she had to ready them for living in a culturally diverse society and strove to do her part to create a tolerance for those who are "different," for those whose cultures are not necessary mainstream but who are equally proud of their heritage. She also asked students to examine their own backgrounds to find their roots and to honor the customs and uniqueness of their own family histories. These are life-changing ideas and are the very ones that will benefit the younger generations. These are the basis for a productive life and a peace-filled United States of America. Senora Cruz dares to step out of her comfort zone, so she can dare her students to do the same. That is why I am voting for Senora Cruz as life-changer of the year.

Senora Cruz, A name that I soon came to enjoy. Easily one of the best teachers I've ever meet. Unfortunately for me I did not have her for Spanish one, for she made me excited to learn more about Latino culture and holidays. Probably one of the best qualities is that she is so careing to the point that she would never leave a kid struggling. She would always offer extra help to make sure the student will succeed. What I believe that sets her apart from any other candidate is the connection she has with her students. Further pushing them to chase after there dreams and futher develop their passion for what they love to do as well as showing the importance of being bilingual within the student's chosen dream. For me she had an impact in making want to try even harder on my dream to finally return Florida back to it's rightful spot as the second best area for films with my very own film studio. She is definitely a perfect candidate for this award, For all the hard work and dedication she gives to her job.

Senora Cruz is an overall great person. In her professional and personal life she has shown great kindness for her students and other faculty. Always recognizing that the life of a student is what impacts their learning, she shows students respect, and they acknowledge that by being more motivated to work in her class. She offers extra help to fit student's schedules. She is always willing to stay after school, or to help students during her free or lunch period. She is a truly great candidate for this award and I hope she gets the recognition that she deserves.

I have had Mrs. Cruz for Spanish twice: once in 7th grade and once in 9th grade. She is the opposite of a boring teacher; she keeps attention and is nice yet firm with her class. She keeps things moving and entertaining and is the best of my Spanish teachers that I have ever had. She is not ancient with the way kids act, and she is very respectful and interesting. Mrs. Cruz made learning vocabulary in Spanish easier by turning the words into certain little phrases. As mentioned, I have known her for a long time, and it has made the best impact on me for learning Spanish. My brother and I both appreciate her for her fun style of teaching and I am glad her charisma and hard work has earned her recognition.

Now a Word Heritage site it is one of Puerto Rico’s most iconic structures. My sister Sarah has been an examplary achiever since very young. I remember seeing her reading every day as we were growing up. Our favorite game to play was teacher. Of course most of the time she was the teacher and I was her beautician. I have seen her fulfill most of her dreams and desires. She currently has a very full plate and yet she manages to take care of everything. After reading all the comments of others that know her at different levels, I shall say she inspires me once more. Best wishes in all you do; as I am sure it’s always helping others. Love you very much sister

Señora Cruz is a very positive and optimistic teacher. She helps any student that even seems to be struggling. If a student doesn’t understand something. She takes the time to explain the student’s issue until he/she understands it. Señora Cruz is very tolerant and advocates for her students’ schedule, and she stays after school every day to allow any student to come for additional help and/or to finish work. Señora Cruz also formulates pneumonic devices that help students better understand and remember what she teaches. She also introduces her students to Spanish culture by hosting fiestas and allows students to bring in food to eat together. Also, for holidays, she teaches her students about what other countries do for that holiday. For instance, she shows videos about the Day of the Dead for Spanish culture instead of Halloween. So the class celebrates the Day of the Dead instead. Señora Cruz focuses on her students’ education and ensures that they understand what she is teaching to avoid further confusion. Señora Cruz shows more compassion and motivation than any teacher I’ve ever seen. She is devoted to being a teacher and her students are lucky to be a part of her class. While being a teacher, she is also a very caring mother of a handicapped daughter. She is very nurturing to her daughter along with her students in class. Señora Cruz cares much for her daughter as she does her students.

An outstanding Teacher is one whose life reflects the Love and Committment to others in and out of the classroom. Sarah Cruz is that type of person. I am at awe as I look at life and see a Teacher, a mother, a wife, with a very possitive attitude in completing what ever task she faces. There is nothing mundane as a Teacher shaping the mind of young students, then going home and dealing, in a loving manner, as she takes care of her children. I highly put forth Sara Cruz name for Life Changer Of The Year Award. Ralph Artlgas, Deacon Grace Church

Ms Cruz is a wonderful teacher. She is very hard working and inspires me to do work and is very smart with her planning, She knows what to do in difficult situations.Mrs. Cruz has a handicap daughter. Her daughter suffered a massive stroke at 30 days old. She is medically fragile with many disabilities. Her daughters story taught me to appreciate my life and not complain about homework or school work cause at the end it really is to help me and some kids don't even get to study and don't learn or get a good job. I value this teacher as one of the best teachers at Springstead High School because what really inspired me is that her daughter is handicap and disabled and she still appreciates life giving her a child which make me appreciate my life.

Most teachers just sit behind their desks with powerpoints open, making their students take tons of notes and do countless worksheets while offering no help during this time or help outside of the classroom. Unlike these teachers, Mrs. Cruz takes the time to get to know ALL of her students and acknowledges that some students have a harder time learning new things and adapts for each individual case. She's always offering and giving up her time to help her students that are in need of after school tutoring/assistance. Sadly enough the class period of the day I have with her doesn't have the best of students, whether they are disrespectful or choose not to try as hard, but even through all of this she doesn't give up on them and tries to give them the education they need, all the while keeping up with the progress of the rest of her students. Outside of class, she spends her time helping her students and even apart from that she's apart of extracurricular activities helping out the community and people in need. Her ability to do all of these things is just absolutely astonishing to me. I definitely agree with her nomination for this award through and through, and hopefully everyone else will think the same!

Senora Cruz was a wonderful Spanish teacher to me and my class during my sophomore year. We always had fun in her class and always learned something new in Spanish. Senora is a very nice and kind teacher and person, if I must say. Senora Cruz is, overall, a great teacher. I wouldn't mind taking another class with her again in the future.

Mrs. Cruz is a very understanding teacher. If one student struggles with a lesson, she'll go back over it again as if she knows that the entire class needed that review. She includes life lessons in our Spanish lesson that I feel will help us in the future once we graduate. She is also very respectful and kind, but at the same time knows when she needs to put her foot down and make us focus on our task. She seems to care a lot for all of her students(even the bad ones), and I really like that about her. I also like the fact that she tries to make our lessons fun.

Sra Cruz is overall a very caring and selfless woman. She always puts her students first regardless of how busy she is. Sra Cruz has become one of my favorite teachers over the very short time i've been in her class. When I was completely lost with my online Spanish she took the time out of her busy day to tutor me after school. She would even work with me straight through her own lunch. She didn't have to but she did it out of the kindness of her heart. She truly cares about her students. I didn't come into this class with high hopes because I was so confused with my online class. None the less she exceeded all expectations. Thank you so much Sra Cruz for all that you do.

Mrs. Cruz is an amazing teacher that diffidently deserves this award. She puts her family and students first. She works long hours at school and goes home to her daughter to take care of her. Mrs. Cruz has helped my dad out with his Real Estate Business by getting him a customer. She has also help my family by donating a few jackets to our family considering how cold this winter has been. Mrs.Cruz is a hard working teacher, mother, wife and she is absolutely a life changer.

Sra. Cruz is a great teacher who is hard working and makes sure each of her students get attention. She won't give up on student's work and will be sure you learn something. She gives students skills they will be able to use the rest of their lives. Also they will give you opportunities to communicate, and touch the lives of people you wouldn't have had the chance to before.
