Mark Armenta was nominated by his principal, Trisha Lancaster.
Mr. Armenta is a physical education teacher at SOAR Charter Academy, and he has been there since its first year of operation in 2008. He began by helping design and facilitate the after school program. As he continued his education, he soon become a physical education teacher in 2013.
"I would have to say that Mark's strengths cover all the criteria listed for a LifeChanger," Lancaster said. "He makes a difference in the lives of his students daily. He is always here, he is always consistent and he is always dependable. He is an effective mentor for thirteen 7th and 8th graders."
Mr. Armenta naturally builds relationships with students of all grades. He understands the importance of these relationships, and how it empowers students to use them on campus as a support system. Mr. Armenta gets to know each of his students' back stories to better understand their individualized needs. He connects with their interests, playing music before and during his classes to engage the whole child, and providing thoughtful physical education lessons that tie in with real world applications.
"He shows obvious and contagious pride in his students' performance, effort, and character," Lancaster said. "He is not only dedicated to his students, but to the entire school's success. He encourages staff in supporting all students. Mark is also our athletic director and coach for multiple sports. He knows the importance of students exploring various activities to help find their personal strengths, and encourages them to try and work past any fears they may have. He promotes positive interaction and sportsmanship."
Mr. Armenta has shown great leadership in his roles at SOAR. As a coach, he has united other local charter schools through the sports program. Under his supervision and instruction, the program has grown every year. He is a founding board member, and has served in this capacity for ten years. This role has enabled him to see the big picture, understand his school's mission, and serve as a bridge for parent and staff perspectives at meetings. SOAR's mission is to equip students to become independent critical thinkers. The program instills the values of making a positive impact by serving one's community.
Mr. Armenta positively communicates with his colleagues and speaks up when he has concerns. He is often the voice for those that haven't found theirs yet. His organization skill allow him to be well prepared for any task he takes on.
"Mark takes initiative on our campus and will do anything for anybody," Lancaster said. "He is a true team player who is dedicated to all things SOAR! He is a natural LifeChanger and he is so appreciated by students, parents, and staff."
